From all in dications th e general season w as a good one despite th e confusion in Salem at the beginning. G am e biologists rep o rt th a t h u n tin g pressu re w as not up to p a r d u rin g the first and second w eek ends, w ith no heavy concentrations of h u n te rs as com pared tcf past years. H ow ever, in contrast to past years, the p ressu re ALUMNI was co n stan t all d u rin g the season, w ith the heaviest, of course, ex p erien ced d u rin g th e few days w hen e ith e r sex -an im als could be taken. T hroughout th e state d eer h u n tin g w as considered good w ith probably th e highest kill m ade d u rin g e ith e r-se x hunt. A lthough th e to tal kill w ill not be d eterm in ed u n til all re p o rt card s have been retu rn ed , th e gam e com m is sion feels the d e er season w as a successful one. All cards are needed in o rd e r to accu rately d eterm in e th e to ta l kill. For those of you w ho do not know , th e reg u latio n s re q u ire th a t h u n te rs re tu rn the rep o rt cards w ith in 30 days follow ing the close of th e season. F a ilu re to do so could resu lt in being denied a h u n tin g license n e x t year. So le t’s get on th e ball and re tu rn the cards- We have ju st m ade a tally of the h u n tin g casualties fo r th is y e a r and find w e have had 19 shooting accidents so far. The sad p a rt of these shootings is th a t 3 of th e 19 w ill h u n t no m ore having died a violent d e ath from gunshot w ounds. It m ig h t bp of in te re st to know th a t 12 of th e w o u n d - ings w ere caused by persons 24 y ears old or un d er. The o th er shootings w ere caused by tw o persons of 27 years, one of 42 years, one of 45 years, and th e last th re e u n know n, P erh ap s h u n te rs m ay be a little m ore cau tio u s if we took a look at som e of these shootings ju s t to u n d e rstan d how they happened. In m ost all cases w e can put the blam e on plain carelessness. In one of the deaths, th e shooter w as w alking behind w ith his w eapon pointed at th e v ictim 's back. A nd one of the card in al ru les of gun safety is not to point a w eapon at an y th in g you do not wish to’ shoot. T ere’s a n o th e r victim shot th ro u g h th e stom ach w ith a 30-30 rifle w hen his p a rtn e r saw a m ovem ent and th o u g h t it was a deer. The victim was w earing blue levis, blue denim ja c k e t open a t th e fro n t over a red flannel sh irt, and had on a b rig h t yellow cap. A nother victim ended up w ith a sh attere d leg w hen his h u n tin g p a rtn e r looked th ru th e telescope on his 30-06 rifle and thought he saw a deer. D istance w as ab o u t 20 yards.
