A t a conference M onday n ig h t b etw een council m em bers and engineers fo r th e H ighw ay Com m ission, th e c i ty w as advised th a t th e sta te w ill pay th e cost of re -lo c a tin g any w a te r m ains now on p riv a te p ro p e rty w hich m u st be m oved to m ak e w ay for th e new highw ay. A t the sam e tim e, th e city also w as advised th a t if th e w a te r m ains a re m oved from th e ir p re se n t location on state p ro p erty , th e e n tire cost m u st be borne by th e city. E ngineers advised t h e council th a t the w a te r m ains could rem ain in th e ir p resen t location w hich, a t some points w ill be d ire c tly u n d e r th e pavem ent, b u t if the m ains should sp rin g a leak at som e fu tu re d ate and dam age th e roadw ay, th e city w ould be forced to pay for any rep airs, e ith e r to th e h ighw ay o r th e w a te r m ains. T he pipe lines p re sen tly a re located on sta te p ro p e rty u n d e r a p e rm it g ra n te d th e city some y ears ago by the state, and the highw ay com m ission insists it could, if it §o desired, have this p e rm it revoked. It has been estim ated it w ould cost th e city in excess of $30,000 to re -lo c a te th e w a te r m ains into th e city if it should be necessary to r e m ove them from p ro p e rty ow ned by th e state.
