Highway 26 W ill Be Modernized
Under Huge Road Program Measure
SANDY— Highway 26 between
Portland and Central Oregon will
be modernized and re-located in
many areas to eliminate the pres
ent dangerous curves, as a result
of the passage of the 32 billion
dollar highway program enacted
this week by Congress.
This was the assurance given the
Sandy Post Thursday morning by
officials of the Oregon State High­
way Commission in Salem.
I State highway officials indicated
they expected to receive approx­
imately $26,000,000 a year for the
two main highway systems, 99 and
30. which will be converted into
four-way freeways, while an ad­
ditional $12,000,000 per year will
be allotted to other state high­
way systems within the state. The
state will match this latter high­
way windfall with an additional
$4,800,000 per year, making a
total of $16,800,000 annually to be
spent on state highway systems
other than 99 and 30. Money for
