Ground Detection Test Scheduled June 23, 24 A nationwide training exercise to test ground detection of air craft will be in operation for a 32 hour period June 23 and 24, Col C D. Vincent, commanding, officer of the 25th Air Division at Everett, announced Saturday. Oregon will have 200 ground observation posts during the test, which will begin at 8 a.m. June 23 and conclude at 4 p.m. June 24. Portland will 'be the seat of the filter centers. . Air force officials point to the importance of the ground observ er in aircraft detection to cover the blind spots in the radar sys- tem, which docs not follow the earth’s curvature and cannot penetrate mountains and other opaque masses. Record Breaking Group Receives Scholar ships; Summer Session Starts Once again a record breaking group of 4-H’ers departed by chatered buses for a 10 day ses sion on the Oregon State campus. These club members have been awarded scholarships which have been provided by individuals, or ganizations, and business con cerns. According to Myrabelle Paul Mahan, county 4-H agent, Clackamas county is one of the four counties in Oregon to fill their quota. William “Bill” Smith, newly appointed 4-H extension agent in Clackamas county, accompanied the delegation for his first sum mer school in Oregon. Three experienced chaperones, Mrs. Irene Sedgwick, Mrs. Ray Brews ter and Mrs. C. T. Smelser; also accompanied the delegation and will assist with the supervision of 4-H’ers on the campus during summer school. Among the group of 79 girls and 34 boys attending the 1951 session are: Carole AIL Jack George, Glee Houghtalirig and John West of Brightwood;: Mona Creekmur, Carol Calkins and Marian Marsh, Bull Run; El vina Burlingame, Allen Taylor, Shirley Konsella, Norma Mattox, Viola Hudson and Rbsaling Rit- zau, Boring; Jo Anne Burnett, Eagle Creek, and Margaret In- nis and Dixie Jenks of Sandy.
