for
her
church’s help, Mrs. A. L. Con
verse, Sandy, painted a four by
six canvas entitled, “The Great
Commission,” and presented it
to the Sandy Community, church
as a thank offering.
“The pastor and the church
members have been so kind to
me,” Mrs. Converse said, “I
thanked them with what talent
possess.”
The painting depicts a scene
from the Bible, showing Christ
talking to his disciples on the
banks of the Jordan. It took
two months to complete, in Mrs.
Converse’s spare time. This is
her first religious painting and
she hopes it will remind her fel
low church members that she
is with them in spirit though,
due to illness, she is unable to
attend church services.
Mrs. Converse has been inter
ested in a rt work since she was
a child and has exhibited pen
and ink drawings at several
county fairs in Gresham. She
first began to paint in oils while
convalescing in a sanitorium in
The Dalles, in 1946.
From her hospital window,
Mrs. Converse was able to see
the twin peaks of The Dalles and
she painted the scene from the
limited area she was able to

rud is president of the club
and Mrs. Bunnell is vice pres
ident.
Mrs. Walter Wesselink and
Mrs. Richard Wesselink were el

Business Club To Give
Swedish Smorgasbord
A Swedish Smorgasbord will
be served by the Sandy Business
and Porfessional Women in the
Woman’s Club hall, Saturday,
April 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. This
is the second annual smorgas
bord and the club plans to make
it a yearly affair.
Last year’s dinner, held May
6, featured Swedish food served
by the club members in Swedish
national costume. Purpose of
the dinner is to raise funds for
the club’s annual scholarship,
given to a worthy girl graduate
of Sandy high school so that
she may attend business college.

is only her hobby, she has used
her works to decorate her home.
A resident of Sandy for 13
years, Mrs. Converse has a son,
Arden, who is 12. Her husband
is a State Highway Department
employee on the Mt. Hood Loop
highway.
Since she is confined to her
home often, Mrs. Converse draws
on her imagination and the sur
rounding scenery for inspiration.
“The Great Commission” will
be hung on the wall behind the
altar in the Sandy Community
church. It will serve to inspire
others with the grateful spirit of
one of its absent members.
