Except for the work of the Northwest Power Pool, the electrical systems in the Northwest might have collapsed/ . Here s how it works: The pool interconnects electric systems m Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana and British Columbia. In such a large region there are differences of time zone, weather, stream flows and other factors which produce variations both m power demand and in the output of generat ing plants, area to area. An area that is “short” at one time can draw upon the temporary “surplus” of another area. Later on, the situation may be completely reversed and power will flow back the other way. ’ By joining resources and coordinating the operation of all generating plants m the Northwest, power pool engineers are abte to utihze up to 600,000 M fo w » o f power ,haf would SO to waste i f the member systems were isolated! That’s more power than Bonneville dam produces! 176 Northwest was short of power last winter, and condi tions will continue critical for several years to come The power pool is one of the measures taken by electrical svste™« to meet .the emergency while new dams and powerhouse me being rushed to completion. wcmouse are These Are the Power Pool Members P ortland G eneral E lectric C ompany Portland, Oregon P acific P ower & L ight C ompany Portland, Oregon M ountain S tates P ower C ompany Albany, Oregon W ashington W ater P ower C ompany Spokane, Washington P uget S ound P ower & L ight C ompany Seattle, Washington C ity of S eattle D epartment of L ighting Seattle, Washington C ity of T acoma L ight D ivision Tacoma, Washington J dahç P ower C ompany Boise, Idaho U tah P ower C ompany Salt Lake City, Utah M ontana P ower C ompany Butte, Montana B ritish C olumbia E lectric C o ., D'h' Vancouver, B.
