W hy? B ecause he believed th a t happiness cam e from sim plifying one s life instead of m ak in g it m ore complex. T h is w as in th e day w hen th is co u n try w as ju s t w aking up to th e riches th a t m ight be obtained in th is expand ing land. T horeau m ean t w h a t he said, so he got a n ax an d built him self a cabin in th e woods. Com pleted, it w as ab o u t th e size of th e a v erag e living room. He did all th e w ork him self: p u t in th e windows, built th e fireplace, placed th e shingles. H e k ep t a jo u rn al o f h is expenses which am o u n ted to less th a n th irty dol lars. T h en he te s te d his theory- Lived alone, did all h is own w ork —b o th housew ork and labor. B ut it gave him tim e fo r little th in g s; he m ade frien d s w ith the birds and th e anim als. He had a n e x tr a o rd in ary pow er o v er them . He could ta m e a fish by feeding it, th e n he w ould scoop his h an d and b ring it out o f the w ater. He loved long w alks, w ith a notebook in one pocket and a one- lunged sp y g la ss in an o th er.
