Farewell set for fathers Corklin, Pugliese on behalf of the arts in Northern Curry County On Sunday, April 25 a farewell reception will be held for Father Stanley Corklin and Father Richard Pugliese at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church from 3 to 5 p.m. These two men came to the Oregon Coast to retire six years ago but Father Corklin answered a call to become Priest-in-Charge of the Port Orford congregation. He has been instrumental in attaining many improvements and upgrades at this active church. Both men have been very involved in the community and have given many hours to the Friends of Cape Blanco and the Point Orford Heritage Society as well as all the various church activities. They will be leaving the area to return to Vermont to be near family and actually retire. All members of the community are invited to attend the reception and wish them well as they leave Port Orford. St. Christopher’s is located on 9th Street off of Hwy. 101 behind the Downtown Fun Zone. On Saturday, May 1, help the Langlois and Port Orford Libraries once again to celebrate World Labyrinth Day. The libraries are recog- nizing this day by inviting everyone to bring food and other non-per- ishable staples to the American Legion Hall. These items will be shared between the Langlois Food Cupboard and The Common Good. We’ll build a temporary labyrinth with your donated items, so please join us and walk the path to help relieve hunger in our local neighbor- hoods. Kids and adults will enjoy making free finger labyrinths to take home. We’ll provide the pattern of an ancient classical labyrinth; you personalize it with your own unique finishing touches (all materials provided). Please bring canned goods (not expired), shelf staples (beans, rice), paper products (toilet paper, tissue, paper towels), personal care items (even the freebies from hotels) and/or pet food. Each contribution will literally build the labyrinth and pave the way to ease hunger here. Cash donations can be mailed or dropped off at either of the libraries before April 26. Checks should be made payable to Langlois Public Library and we’ll do the shopping. You will also find collec- tion boxes in both libraries during April. 541-332-FILM (3456) Coming Thurs: Award winning singer/songwriter coming savoyportorford.com Office 541-332-3105 The Bounty Hunter Matthew Price, recipient of the Oregon’s Best Singer/Songwriter of the Year award for 2008, is bringing his freewheeling folk rock music to the Port Orford Community Center for a one night performance on Friday, April 30. Catherine Tucker Scoutmaster’s corner By Scott Halse For the Port Orford News After our flag ceremony and the Pledge of Allegiance, we talked about our community service proj- ect on Sunday April 25th. We were asked to help with the chili cook-off and BBQ being held at the community service building. We are looking forward to helping out, and can't wait to see you there. We worked on some activities in preparation for our camporee on May 14th-16th. We tied some knots and lashings, and we prac- ticed our first aid skills. The scouts were shown how to tie a splint on a broken arm. We did some drills and the scouts pretended to come up on another hurt scout and administer first aid. We ran through the drill several times and the scouts were taught the correct way to call for help and adminis- ter first aid. We are still working on our Physical Fitness Merit Badge. The scouts are improving every week. Three weeks to go to get their merit badge. Our candy and meat stick sale has come to an end and the scouts ended up with a total of $560 in sales. They did a great job and I would like to thank the communi- ty for supporting our efforts. As a troop we receive 25% of the sales, and the scouts earned some prizes awarded by the Boy Scout Area Council. We are still accepting cans and bottles for our cans for camp bot- tle drive. Call 541-332-9104 for pick-up. We closed the meeting with Jovani Heard playing reveille on the scout bugle. Scout meetings are on Monday nights at 6:30pm at the American Legion Building. Come on down and have some fun with us. P.O. Rotary’s Community Garden is near completion The Rotary Community Garden is nearing completion. The land has been cleared, the fencing is ready to be put in place. If everything goes according to plan, gardeners will be able to sign up for plots beginning April 29. In the next several days, the lumber will be milled for the raised beds, the fence will go up, the individual raised beds will be constructed, water lines will be put in, and the soil and compost will be added, said Rotary First Harvest Chairman Bill McArdle. “Watch for announcements in community papers and on bul- letin boards for the date and place to signup for the plots.” Biggest Loser II starts soon Here’s your chance to lose some weight before summer and maybe win the prize money for doing it.
