Frances was born March 25, 1915 in Ostrander, WA, the fifth of eight children born to Andrew & Minnie Heman. She died December 12, 2009 in Coos Bay at the age of 94. She grew up on the family farm in Columbia County, Oregon. At age 8, she was cooking and baking for the family while her parents and older siblings were milking cows and working on the farm. She left home at 16 to cook and clean house for a minister and his family in Rainier, OR while she attended school. After marrying Orlow Gore, she started her family while liv- ing at various logging camps and mill towns throughout Oregon. Following her move to Port Orford, she was the area’s only Avon representative for years, a familiar sight on delivery day as she walked from one end of town to the other. Quite often people would comment on her young son funning along behind, trying to keep up. With the help of her daughter, she would also take 3 or 4 days a month to deliver to all the hous- es as far north as the airport. During this time she married Robert A. (Gus) Wallace. One of their greatest pleasures was entertaining and feeding as large a group of family as they could gather for the holidays. If she cooked for ten or twelve, she would say “only a few came to dinner”. Frances was active in the VFW Auxiliary for several years, holding various offices. In her later years she was an active member of the First Community Church. Her love of cooking and baking never changed, as she always had time to bake cookies for Sunday school, dishes for church potlucks and give out her delicious rolls to friends and neighbors for their holiday dinners. She is survived by sister, Florence Eichler of Portland; brother Donald & Mary Heman of Dallas, OR; daughters, Lois Crum of Port Orford, Nancy & David W. Pratt November 6, 1946 - December 15, 2009 A final memorial will be held on Sat. Jan. 16, 2010 at 3:00pm at the Port Orford Cemetery on Cemetery Loop Road, Port Orford, OR. Duane Peterson of Yuma, AZ; sons, Harold (Sonny) & Debbie Gore of Killeen, TX, Clyde & Rhonda Gore of Port Orford; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grand- children and eight great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Gus) Wallace, grandson, Robert Hughes, sisters, Alice Trotter and Irene Divine; brothers, Chester, Orel and Daniel Heman. Law enforcement report Pedestrian dies east of Bandon Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of the intera- gency Coos County Crash Team, is continuing the investi- gation into Monday morning's fatal auto/pedestrian crash that resulted in the death of a Bandon man on Highway 42S east of the Bandon city limits. According to ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), this is the first traffic fatality in Oregon for 2010. According to OSP Recruit Trooper Khris Brandon, on January 11 at approximately 6:22 a.m. a 2005 Dodge Stratus four-door driven by Brenda Rae Wilson, age 46, from Bandon, was westbound on Highway 42S near milepost 1 traveling through a slight right curve when her car struck a man walk- ing in the westbound lane. The conditions were dark and the man, identified as Randall Earl Tourney, age 49, from Bandon, was wearing dark clothing. Tourney was pronounced deceased at the scene. He lived about 1/2 mile from the scene. Wilson was not injured. She was using safety restraints. OSP troopers from Coos Bay Area Command office are con- tinuing the investigation. Bandon Police Department, ODOT and the Coos County Crash team assisted. Representatives of the intera- gency crash team were from Coos County Sheriff's Office, Coos Bay Police Department, North Bend Police Department and Coquille Police Department. The highway was closed to one lane until about 9:45 a.m. Traffic stop leads to 4-lb. pot bust A Cave Junction-area man was arrested Friday morning during an Oregon State Police (OSP) traffic stop on Highway 101 near Coos Bay after he was found in possession of 4 pounds of marijuana. On January 8, an OSP trooper stopped a 1983 Honda Civic four-door station wagon driven by Elusha Ferdon, age 26, from Cave Junction for traveling 43 mph in a 20 mph school zone on Highway 101 near milepost 239. During contact the trooper noted an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Subsequent investigation led to the discovery of 4 one pound vacuum sealed bags of marijua- na in a duffel bag inside the vehicle. Additional small amounts of marijuana and other evidence was also seized. Ferdon was arrested and lodged in Coos County Jail for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and DUII- Drugs. Scoutmaster’s corner By Scott Halse For the Port Orford News We started out the meeting out with a game of Buzz, Bang, and Boom. The scouts sounded off by counting numbers 1 through 7. This game requires ‘Donation fund for Kyle Lawrence’ is at Sterling Savings Bank Kyle is a 17-year-old Senior at Bandon High School who plays soc- cer with the Pacific High School team. He was hit by a van on Highway 101 at Pacific High School on Friday morning, August 28th. Any donations to help cover the costs of his medical bills are very much appreciated each scout to replace the num- ber 7 with the word Buzz and then the number 5 with the word Bang. After this is accomplished in a rotation of scouts sounding off, the number 3 is replaced with the word Bang. This game focuses on memorization skills to achieve the goal of being the last scout in the circle without making mistakes. Next we recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The theme for this meeting was to focus on indi- vidual advancement goals towards the scouts’ next rank. Three of the scouts were given a work book with the written Kyle Lawrence requirements to receive their Scout Badge. The other two scouts received their work books for the requirement of Second Class and First Class Scout. They each received a 16x24 poster board to take home to chart their progress so they can start completing the tasks to receive their next rank. We decided to work on the Hiking Merit Badge as a goal to achieve over the next few months. We will take another hike towards the end of the month.
