Port Orford News May 13, 2009 • Page 3 Viewpoints Letters to the editor Write-in Dave Rickel for Port Commissioner, Pos. #2 I recently was out of state for about a month due to a death in the family. After getting back into town onthe 23rd of March, I learned that the deadline had passed to fild for re-election to the Port Commission. I was very disappointed to learn that my name would not be on the ballot int he next election as I want to cntinue to serve the Port Of Port Orford District as a commissioner. So this year I will be running as a write-in for the Port Commission. Please, when you ballot comes out in May, write-in David Rickel for position #2. Thank you. Dave Rickel, Port Orford Thanks to the board mem- bers Here we are once again elect- ing members to the PORFPD and here we are once again in a huge vindictive, personal one- sided mudslinging contest. Do we ever ask ourselves why we are at this point once again? Can we ask ourselves if we can just be happy with the huge changes the current board members have accomplished? I know a big majority of us can and I also know that there are some that would rather cause a bunch of unnecessary turmoil. I for one, am so tired of hear- ing about the BS that gets spread around by a certain few. Can we for once just look at the facts and then ask ourselves, is this someone we really want as a board member. Someone who can’t and will not try to get along with everyone. Someone who would put all their energy towards causing trouble rather than using it to serve a better purpose. I really begin to wonder how th board members feel about all that they have accomplished and then basically have it said that it isn’t good enough, that their efforts by some are not accept- able. Well, I say to all of you board members that you have done an outstanding job. Thank you Edna Auld, Marie Van Art, Ed Tennant, Rick Hazard and John Johnston. What you have done for this community and our fire- fighters has been no small feat. Sincerely, Brenda Duncan, Port Orford Questions about past board members? Is Mrs. Auld really that naïve to think that hers is the only PORFD board that has done anything? Where does she think every thing that was in place when she became a board member came from? It came from a lot of ded- icated firefighters and board members before her, who had a lot more experience then she! And I might add they did a lot more for the district and for the firefighters then this board could ever think of!! The usable food in cans, boxes or packages is sorted when received and in time heads to families in need. When donat- ing, the pantry can use only those items with good pull dates. This successful first time event brought a new approach to food drives providing both an educational and enlightening event for all participating. We here at The Common Good, both volunteers and clients, appreciate The Food Labyrinths time and commit- ment and thank them once again. Stephen Abbott, Port Orford A few thoughts about the up and coming elections It's squabble time again. With everyone tossing their opinions out there, I thought I'd put my two cents into the ring also. Some of the letters to the editor I've read lately have valid points but most seem to be just petty finger pointing. Whether you live inside the city limits or not, this being a free country, a per- son still has a right to express what they think, regardless of the fact that their opinion may or may not have anything to do with the situation. On the whole, I'd like to think that people will make decisions on how they vote, for the various issues, based on common sense and not what some one on a soap box has to say. Bottom line, we know the people running for the fire board. Vote for those who have done a great job and not on how you feel about them per- sonally. Vote "Yes" for the police levy because we just don't have the funds available to continue the police department without it. I owned a business in Port Orford for over 15 years. We had a chimney fire, spotted by a volunteer fireman on his way to the weekly meeting. Without his keen eyes and willingness to do what he did, we'd have loss the front living quarters. I didn't care and still don't about the politics governing his being there. I was just damn thankful he was. We need a board who runs efficiently, not one who's sole purpose is to function com- prised of the "in" people. Use that as your yard stick when deciding who to vote for... peo- ple who have experience versus those who don't! When it comes to the police levy, I have to say that I remem- ber what it was like when there wasn't a police force in town. We had several break-ins and waiting over an hour or even to the next day wasn't much of a help. I'd hate to think what would have happened if we had been held up and things had gone bad. Over the course of our living there, right outside my living room window, there were at least two terrible acci- dents where children crossing the street were plowed down. It has been my sister that has always kept me Doug Jamieson up to date with fami- ly history and what's happening with those that I have lost con- tact with over the years. She has been the compassionate one. She is the one that has worked to the point of physical disability to provide for her family, and continues to work taking care of people who no longer can care for themselves. She would give everything for her children and grandchil- dren, and I believe probably does. After all I have written about love and compassion, I have taken time to tell my wife and immediate family the abun- dance of my love for them, but I have not expressed it toward my "Sis.” Well, that can now be considered history, because I want you and her to know that she should win the Mother's Day award. You (I'm sure), have some- one in your family that deserves an award of your appreciation. Sincerely, Cathi Choquette, Port Orford Consider the Police levy carefully Soon, Port Orford residents will be considering a ballot issue that will dramatically impact law enforcement within their town. I was raised and schooled in your town and my parents lived their lives there. As a youngster, I felt too con- strained by the “entering” and “leaving” Port Orford signs. I went away to college, joined the military, later joining the Los Angeles Police Department. Now retired, I am a part time Oregon resident, living on the Elk River about three months each year. With age has come a greater appreciation of what we had, and still have in this small town. Like many of you, I remain concerned about Port Orford and have followed vari- ous issues in the local publica- tions. When I was three and four years old, it was my sister that would dress me up and put me in a stroller. When we were in the car, as so often was the case in our early years, making our trek to California, it was my sister that calmed my nerves when Mom and Dad would get into their little arguments. She never seemed to mind her little brother sharing the back seat with her. Either I have blocked it out of my memory banks, or I don't remember her saying as much as a cross word to me when we were growing up. I know there were times I must have really irritated her. Especially the time I accidentally shot her in opinion" helps bring about two very important outcomes. First, by the visible presence of the police, people slow down. Second, it sends a message to all, not just those inside the city limits, that if they don't slow down and obey the law, they will pay for it. If you don't like what it looks like on the streets of the town when they run the exercise, get out there and help them come up with a prettier and more efficient way to do it. I'm certain they still have city council meetings every month where you can leave your sug- gestions. Better yet, donate money to the police department to help overcome the deficit they are suffering now. I'm sure they always could use more vol- unteers of time and money. Despite the history of old regimes and your like or dislike of what has happened in the past, it is just that... the past! Get over it! Lets band together and help those trying to make it better by supporting their efforts. The constant negative hub-bub is just a waste of ener- gy and not productive.
