Proposals to Increase state
hunting and fishing licenses
fees often have tough sledding.
Illinois Is a g rim example of
this. With no license increase
since 1957, Illin ois ranks well
below the national hunting l i
cense level, with a resident fee
of only $3.25. Two years ago,
a conservation department
plea to hike license fees, and
from the present rate to that
of $2. was squelched by the
Illin ois legislature. It was not a
partisan move; the fee in
crease was opposed “ from
both sides of the a is le .” Oppo
sition stemmed from leg isla
tors' reluctance to raise fees,
and from sportsmen who didn’t
feel like they were getting their
money’s worth and were r e
luctant to “ throw good money
after bad. ’ ’
