Mrs. Archie Dellaven, M rs. Jack Lenox. M rs Wilbur Sy pher, M rs David Barklow, M rs B ill Hildebrand, Mrs. John Bjerg, M rs. Clinton F u l ler. M rs HaroldCaughell, and M rs Ed Burt. IN SALEM FOR GRAND LODGE Dick Barklow was in Salem for four days this week attend ing Grand Lodge which is the annual meeting of Masonic Lodge by Don W illner Governor M cCall has the flare of a showman and often overstates his case The r e cent report of the Governor's Energy Task Force combined with his most dramatic press conference probably did what few others could have accom plished The people of O re gon are talking about the en ergy crisis and when the Gov ernor of Oregon says that may be we w ill have to turn off television sets from 5 to 7 in the afternoon he knows that he can attract attention to some what more conservative solu tions that might have more chance of success F or ex ample, we might well find our selves cutting the speed lim its for motor vehicles in the state and this one act would save a tremendous amount of fuel. The Portland Oregonian commented in a Sun 'ay sup plement that the Governor's Task Force was too environ mentally oriented for their liking and was more concerned with cutting down on the con sumption of energy rather than finding new sources It seems fa irly clear that we w ill probably have to do both We live in a planet of lim ited resources We cannot build bigger and bigger cars or have an unlimited supply of new electric gadgets without someday reaching a day of reckoning On the other hand we must recognize that there are choices to be made in term s of new sources of ener gy and though each has its own drawbacks, some are p re ferable to others Nuclear power, new hydro - electric dams and as we are discover ing recently even turbines all create environmental prob lems, but hard choices have to be made It is no answer to say that someday we will have fusion power or geother mal power in adequate quanti ties, or even solar power be cause none of these wonderful new sources that are on the horizon w ill supply the needs of today's industrial plants Who should be making some of the hard choices in this whole public policy area of energy? The Governor is on the right track when he c re a t ed the energy task force be cause this is a recognition that in the last analysis the public through its government w ill have to make the deci sions When the Oregon En vironmental Counsel sues to stop Trojan Nuclear Power Plant or on the other hand the Western Environmental Trade Association sues to require the building of the PGE tu r bine plant we get public policy made on a piece-m eal basis Probably the most that this session of the legislature can do in its last few days is to give the Governor such addi tional authority as he may need to deal with crises that may arise between now and the next legislative session. The Governor and the Legis lature should join together to create a permanent commis sion or committee assigned the task of forging a more permanent energy policy for this state with the help of sub stantial citizen participation and involvement flR E N T E D IT I THROUGH THE I WAMT ADS ' MO ». ■—X,»ACA«LT I V IS IT AUNT IN ARAGO Connie Jean and Justin Pot ter.
