The comet Itself consisted of a rather large ball- shaped object, gleaming brightly up there In the vault of the heavens, with its short sparkling Ull seeming to weave a pathway through the glittering stars. This comet was named for its discoverer, J.C. Ben nett, of South Africa. However, despite its brilli ant performance, it sadly lacked the dazzling performance and the thrilling display as viewed during those long past years, when Haley’s Comet hewed Its blazing path during many nights, up there millions of miles be- yong the Western Hemisphere. Its tall was one of tremendous length, brilliance and truly beautiful. GLORY IN THE SKIES The Haley Comet was, Indeed, a most glorious, glamorous, fantastic and awesome sight to behold. Mere words are sadly lacking In attempting to de scribe it, for the simple rea son that It was a sight of a nature that defies description. We feel thatwe have been for tunate to the extent of being afforded the rare opportunity of viewing both the Haley and Ben nett comets during their firey flights across the skies. As a youngster, we spent several evenings back there In those now far distant days of the past, as in wide-eyes wonderment, and no doubt tinged with fear, as completely spellbound we watched the blazing comet--a great ball of condensed glowing light, followed by Its long tall that appeared to consist of mil lions of brilliant, star-like ob jects, blaze its way across those vast stretches of outer space up there that lie millions of miles above this earth. And, until that cocky, little bird blossoms forth in song as the newborn day Is ushered In, we are always somewhat dubious regarding the weather situation. A SCARCITY OF ROBINS It Is perfectly true that In many states, the robins are not in evidence during the winter months, and fail to put in appearance until the weather moderates to a considerable de gree and spring weather is act ually In the making. But, here In the southwestern section of the state, it Is well known by outdoorsmen and bird watchers in general, that robins are far more numerous during the winter months than they are during the spring and summer and early fall. But during the late fall months and the harsh winters, as already mentioned, they are far more numerous. Two years back, there oc- cured the greatest concen tration of the robins during the winter, and near Langlois; in the fields around New Lake and the Star Ranch, than had oc- cured during many previous years. Thousands of them, and consisting of huge flocks numbering from 50 to 100 or more were observed winging about the fields and marshlands, during the entire weeks of the S tate of V The peak of the spring chinook run moved through the lower Rogue River last week with the best fishing of the season oc curring on Thursday ar.d Friday. This week a good number of fish are still available but they are not hitting well and angling success is only fair. Persistent anglers will still enjoy periods of fairly good fishing during the ne xt lew weeks but catches gen erally will be spotty. Trout fishing activity this weekend will center on th e smaller s o u th coast streams which have been well stocked in preparation for the trout op ening cn Saturday, May 23.Legal sized trout up to 12 inches have been released into the Pistol, Chetco and Winchuck Rivers and Hunter Creek to suppliment the natural populations of sea run cutthroat currently in the streams.
