Group Formed To Back Art Of YWfi OM ro w by Another S u n d a y rain was welcomed by all of us parched people but it did dampen the Rotary-Lions Club picnic sched uled on that afternoon at Paradise Point. Seems that the Lions, either being more rugged or more prompt, were able to get their picnic consumed before the deluge came. The barbecued del icacies being prepared by Rotarian Harry Price called for a dryer clime in which to eat, so the group took the food to the elegant indoor recreation room of Pat and Clara Miller. So all’s well that ends well, and "weller" than that they could not have done. * * * Ira and Geneva Tucker, and Ira’s sister, Isabel Baer, jeeped out of town early last Saturday morning on their annual vacation to be spent at their Canadian ranch. They expect to be away two weeks. A new organization of Ore gon industry, business and professional leaders has been formed to help spearhead the $1.5 million fund drive for major expansion and moderni ze tion of the Portland Art Museum and related school fa cilities, it has been announced by Charles F. Adams, chairman of the group. “ Formation of this special business committee points up the growing Impact of art as a combined business and cul tural asset,’’ the Portland bank er said. The new group is the Port- land Art Association’s business and industry committee, sch eduled to have some 80 active participants. It is one of sev eral groups now at work on the first public fund raising drive in the association s 7 5 - year history. Construction will start next June, with completion in Oc tober, 1969, of an additional 3,055 feet of galleries, a new building forthecollege-accred ited school with enrollment ex panded from the present 1000 to 1700 students, plus a new audltorium/1 e c t u r e hall, art restoration facilities and other improvements. The project is at the present museum site on SW Park near Portland State Col lege and the Oregon Historical Society building. Ihe museum and school are the only extensive facilities of their kind in the Pacific North west and, when expansion Is completed, will be among the nation’s best, Adams empha sized. This is their third visit since the Weir family came May first. They, like so many Californians, have fallen m love with this part of the country, and will likely be moving up before too long. ♦ ♦ ♦ . Mike and Jon McWilliams went to Corvallis last wee. . h ike will be a freshman at OSU, and was there for rush week. Jon went along to visit friends. John ("Red") and Nadine drove over after Jon on Monday and to take Mike a few more items. Their nephew and wife, Paul and Judy Howard, were here Saturday night for a brief visit en route to Eugene where both are to attend U of O this semester. * * * Mrs.Dave (Pat) Stan recently received word that her daugh ter Yvonne Heinlein was in touch with another Port Orford fam ily where they are stationed atTaipei,Taiwan. Lt. Col. and Mrs. Heinlein, and family, lave been there for some time but pre sumably Spec. 5 Wayne Streets and his wife the former Kathy Sevems, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Sevems, have only re cently arrived. When the two Port Crford gals got together for the first time they talked up a five hour storm! Kathy and Wayne are attending a branch of the Univeristy of Maryland, and have even ridden in an all wooden train, deisel driven, yet! * * * When Mrs. Pat Starr recently resigned her position as secre tary at Battle Rock Jr. High, Principal Donald Tate invited her for coffee at Bartlett's Cafe. When she arrived, the entire school staff was there to bid her adious and instead of coffee the honoree was plied with a mountain, as it were, of her favorite chocolate ice cream concoction which she had been known to eat in se clusion on occasion, being a perennial weight-watcher. Pat and Dave took a Sunday drive on the day it rained, which turned out to be quite a trek. They went up the Rogue to Agness then on to Powers and returned via Coquille. Very interesting, and outside of the car being well tarred, very enjoyable they report. * * * Saw Polly Childers at the Store Monday looking very well; she is seen around town so infrequently we wondered if she was s t i l l about They have now leased the ranch and she said she would soon have nothing to do. That will be the day! * * * Just remembered an incident that occurred during the Cur ry County Fair. In one of the Exhibit buildings here was Charlie Jensen demonstrating an electric organ though he had sold the P ony Village Music Business some weeks before. When asked "How c o m e ", seems that the new owner had become ill that morning and could not be there,so here was Charlie with a bandaged hand hurt while clearing land on his farm, pinch-hit ting for a friend. Who else but this wonderful guy would have cheerfully appeared and played lovely music with an aching and throbbing hand? Ctchids to! * * * Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Courtenay, of Huntington B e a c h , Calif., paid their annual respects to Port Orford last week for the fourth time, as guests for five days of the Charles Haines. During their visit, Raymond went logging, fishing and bear hunting. They departed last Monday with an ice chest, filled with everything but bear m eat but he will be able to regale his co-workers with some tell tales, believe me! * * * Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ells, he who is the shrimp boat skipper, had guests from Portland over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. A1 Twerp, and son Todd, arrived Saturday afternoon and had an el egant time they reported. The Ells made not one, but two trips to Coos Bay one day last week. One trip would be non-newsy but two must surely rate "man bites dog” space. Didn't find out if they forgot something or if they were just enjoying the scenery on the Heavenly fall day. See you next week. Pollution Topic At Coos Bay Meeting “ Pollution in Oregon will never be abated until the cit izens of Oregon want it abated,’’ Rep. Robert W. Packwood told the noon meeting of the Coos Bay Rotary, Tuesday. “Every one is in favor of eliminating pollution,’’ Packwood contin ued, “but the critical question is ‘are we prepared to make the necessary sacrifices and commitments required to elim inate or severely curtail pol lution’.’’ Packwood noted that “there is a conflict of public opinion among Oregonians which pre vents the decisive action nec essary to ensure pollution abatement.’’ “ The last session of the leg islature passed a number of good anti-pollution bills. The foremost of these offer finan cial incentives to industry and cities for the installation of pollution control and sewage d i s p o s a l facilities. The in itiative is now partially shifted to industry and cities. They must play the part of the good citizen and help in the pollution abate ment effort.’’ Packwood praised th e will ingness of the timber compan ies to accept increased timber texts in order to pay for a study of air and water pollution to their industry. t*In the last analysis, how ever,’’ concluded Packwood, “ tfie public must resolve the cqnfllct between the attitude that wishes to attract industry sad will accept the pollution that goes with lt, and the de sire to make this state a tour ist and recreational paradise, •fo accomplish the latter win t«ia » more stringent and re- Ctrlctlve air and water pol lution legislation than we now Lave, which in turn will ham per the attraction of industry. We cannot have lt both ways.’* MW tr o & f. Recite Vows Renata Ann Steinmetz, form erly of Port Orford, was married Sunday,Sept. 10, in Los Angeles, California, to Benjamin W.
