District Officers Feted
Favors Open Rogue
In this election we are to vote for a United States Senator,
a Governor, and three members of the House of Representatives.
Unthinking men and women may decide to express their disap­
proval of economic conditions by voting for something which they
feel is a political change. Thoughtful voters will, I am sure, pro­
ceed with care before they seek to express their resentment in
this way. Our troubles are industrial and not political and a polit­
ical change may make them worse. Who can assure you that polit­
ical change would create any industrial or business improvement?
The Republican party is fortunate in having as its standard-
bearers well-known citizens of long public and business exper­
ience and of highest personal integrity. For my colleague, Senator
McNary, and for Oregon’s three congressmen, Messrs. Hawley,
Korell and Butlet, let me testify at this point that they have work­
ed with me and among themselves as a unit for Oregon and in be­
half of the numerous projects which the federal government is
carrying forward in this state. I do not know of one argument for
replacing these able public servants with inexperienced men, and
particularly is there no argument in favor of replacing them with
members of the minority party who will be compelled to operate
in congress in company with Southern Democrats and with the
delegations from Tammany Hall and other Eastern Democratic
centers. The West is greatly outnumbered in Washington and the
whole West must work as a unit in order to achieve a high level
of success. All of the surrounding states are Republican and every
interest in the State of Oregon will be aided by the re-election of
the Republican candidates for senator and for members of con­
gress.
Much confusion exists over the election of governor. It
must be remembered that the governor has an indirect but an im­
portant relation to the attitude of our state toward the Republi­
can administration. The death of a senator means that the gover­
nor shall appoint his successor. I might say here that I am enjoy­
ing perfect health, and I believe that Senator McNary is equally
fortunate; but, nevertheless, when we think of the numerous and
important problems-with which our delegation is confronted at.
the national capital all Republicans will realize the danger to Ore­
gon that would result from the appointment of a senator by a gov­
ernor who owes his allegiance to any other than the Republican
party.
