THE SILVER LINING Coast Section Natural fo r Bulb Raising The coast section of Oregon, with plenty of moisture and an even tem perature by reason of the Japanese current, is a natural bulb *gion , a fact well known by the inhabitants. Now com es E. G. Bates of Seaside who testifies that the growing of bulbs comm ercially promises a profitable Industry for this region. Mr B ates says. “I venture to predict, that in ten years there will be a great bulb Industry on Clatsop plains. A few people have gone Into bulb rais ing in that vicinity and have met w ith success on a small scale. Bulb experts from Holland have visited Clatsop plains and say that the re gion is ideal for the cultivation of bulbs, and I would not be surprised if they w ent into the business In that section. The bulbs grow twice as large as in any other place in Oregon, probably because of the sandy condition o f the soil and the moisture. Bulb-growing is compar atively simple. You plant the bulbs in the fall and dig them up the fol lowing summer, and all you have to do is to keep out the weeds. Any one who has visited the Oregon coast has been Impressed with the w ay the dahlias grow. They are im mense and raised without d iffi culty. So if these plants are a suc cess, there is no reason why other bulbs cannot be grown comm er cially."
