This prospect is linked up with the season of “good resolutions" by Mr. George Brandenburg, Secretary of the Oregon Slate Motor Association, who declares that “citizens can do more in the interest of safety than making and keeping a resoultion to contribute their share by driving and walking in obedience to the law.” “Like all other problems involv ing the mass, safety narrows down to the individual,” says Mr. Brand enburg. McMinnville, Oregon < ► Thousand of highway travelers in all parts of the world today hail Thomas H. Grey, Southern Pacific pensioner retired after nearly forty- one years service, as “Father of High way Safety.” In 1884, while working in the rail road's car repair shops at San Fran cisco, Grey designed the now familiar cross arm railroad crossing sign. The first of these signs, on a red- wood standard 18 feet high, was used lo mark a railroad crossing in San Francisco. Within a few months the new type ; of crossing sign was in general use throughout the United States, and at the end of ten years its use had spread to European countries and to Japan. Today it is familiar wherever there are railroads, warning vehicle, and foot passengers to ‘Stop, Look and Listen’. Grey, retired and living quietly at Burlingame, California, says that he has the satisfaction of knowing it has saved many lives and prevented thousands of accidents. --------------- §--------------- MEMBERS OF FRATERNAL ORDER TO VISIT COAST Many eastern members of the fra- ' ernal order, Royal Arcanum, will visit the Pacific Coast when the order I celebrates its fifteenth anniversary at the Supreme Council at Seattle, July 26.
