The Snappy High I Salesman Dayton, - - - Oregon Drainage Walnut planting* in Oregon are de termined by two thing*—depth, drain- age, and fertilitv of the soil, and the elevation. They require a soil at least five or six feet deep, with no water table or impreviou* soil layer* through which the root* cannot penetrate. Good drainage is necessary. Standing water during the winter, or at any time I* almost fatal to root development. I-ate spring and early fall froat* dam age walnut* *everely. Fer that reason, the tree* are planted at least 50 feet above the low valley level», to which there should be open territory for good air drainage. Elevations above 1000 to 1200 feet are of doubtful value, although local condition* sometimes vary this. Walnut planting* in the coast district* are troubled with walnut blight. This I* due to the prevalence of late spring rain* or mint* which are conductive to the development and spread of the dis ease. It is more troublesome in the moist ««aeon, and where the Rummers are much cooler than in the main part of the Willamette valley. A* vet, the experiment station han no exact data on planting* in the coast belt and in termediate points. A number of Dayton Elks were in Portland Tuesday night to wit ness and assist in the initalion of 500 into the Elks lodge, They traveled in disguise on the special train from McMinnville.
