(Copyright.) ------------o------------ THE ROMANCE OF WORDS "PICNIC.” URING the early years of the past century it was cus tomary for those who were Invited to an outdoor entertain ment to bring their own re freshments with them. A list of what was considered nec essary would be made out and passed around among the guests, and each person would agree to furnish a certain por tion of the repast, the name of each article being then crossed, or nicked, off the list. For this reason, this form of what the French refer to as fete cliam- petre became known as a “pick- and-nick,” referring to the selection or picking of the various articles and the cross ing them off upon the card, and, through the usual contrac tion, the central word was dropped and the term shortened to “picnic.” Though this word does not appear to have been used prior to 1802, outdoor entertainments of this nature were common during the two centuries which preceded. Mainwaring, in a letter dated November 22, 1618, describes a birthday party for the prince of Wales, at which “every man did bring his dish of meet.” “Sir George Young’s invention," adds the writer, “was four huge brawny pigs, piping hot and harnessed with ropes of sausages, all tied In a monstrous bag pudding.” D (Copyright.) On August 24, 410, Alaric, at the head of the Goths, entered Rome at midnight, allowing pillaging for six days, but giving orders to his soldiers to be sparing of bloodshed, respect the honor of women and not to burn the buildings dedicated to religion. A part of the city was destroyed with many ancient works of art. Lines to Be Remembered. Don’t Mention It. To do an evil action is base; to do a good action without incurring danger is common enough; but it is the part of a good man to do great and noble deeds, though he risks everything.— Plutarch. “Through a process of scientific cal culations anyone may now view him self as the center of the universe,” said Professor J. “That may be, pro fessor,” replied his friends, "but please do me the favor not to mention it to my wife.” Cuticura Comforts Baby's Skin Where Reasonableness Ended. “Reasonable puppies,” advertises Water Consumption. dog advertiser.
