In Illinois, which is generally re­
garded a« a well nettled agricultural
stale, there are 4,000,000 scree of
ewamp land, in Michigan there are
nearly 6,000,000. Fertile Iowa 2,-
000,000. Minnesota almost 5,000,-
000 acres of rich surveyed ewamp
lande,and huge ewamp areas Dot yet
surveyed.
Arkansas has large
ewamp areas. There is bwamp area
in eastern half of the United States
which ie equal in extent to tbe greet
agricultural states of Indiana, Illi­
nois and Iowa, with three or four
smaller easteriretatee thrown in.
If Steenerson bill demonstrates
that the Government can transform
swamps into .fertile farm land, and
that tbe settler or owner will pay
back to tbe Government the rela­
tively small cost of the improve­
ment, there seems to be no reason
why this woik of creation of value
out of worthless waste should not
go on indefinitely, and provide
homes for millions more of rural
population.
