Merkel was one of five, recipients of the prize given to people ages 35 and younger committed to improving their community by working in the nonprofit sector. Cole was honored for his work helping C people experiencing homelessness and poverty. “Working with people experiencing homelessness and severe poverty can be traumatizing, and I am so grateful I get to work with such a supportive staff,” Cole said. “But ultimately, this award goes out to the 150 men and women who sell Street Roots every single day.
