Portland’s Waterfront
The poet’s poem
by Avendor
by Heath Cleaveland
Hnnn....Hnnnn....Hnnnn....
Amtrak brings in cargo, people
Across a great Steel Bridge, its
Wheels squeal in harmonic notes, a
Lugubrious dirge for the fallen hero.
Whirr...Whirr...Pk!...Pk!...Pk!...
A Red Line crosses my path, is it
Good luck or a chance to make a friend
The speed indicates exercise and plans.
Wroaaa...Wroaaa...Wroaaa...
On rivers, there are various sizes of
Boats, ships, and smaller vehicles, here
A cigarette gives cancer of the ears and not the lungs.
The sounds of the waterfront are filled
With laughter, joy, some shouts and
Emergency vehicles, trains, planes,
Helicopters, recumbents, Segways,
The ding ding of a bicycle built for a family.
On Portland’s waterfront, an ear event always.
This is a poem that ought not to have been written
some things are just better left undone
to be a poet is a serious calling
for your words can really affect someone
Hot dog and beans in the morning
smoke a cigarette and sigh
all these anxious spirits warring
better be famous when I die
Lovers on the fire escapes
pick a pen up from the puddle
and read your poems to the bums
who around the evening fires are huddled
To be a poet is a blessed calling
you can really inspire the world
you can animate the universe
and maybe win the heart of a girl
