Poetry Page 12 Street Roots • July 15-21,2016 Coins from Saturn Untitled by Maddy Brown-Clark by Avendor As I rise up from my bed I look forward to the day ahead Will it be sunny or will there be rain? Will I lose or will I gain? As I wander along the street Will I find some food to eat? Will I have a bed tonight? Or will I sleep under the moon so bright As I stare up at the starry sky I know I’m homeless but I wonder why? I knelt before the altar of summer and begged for liberation. I held the blue tunic of my lover and prayed for peace between the nations. I fought for my art and for the downtrodden as if I were Muhammad Ah. I gathered twigs on the beach at night for our campfires by the sea. And as I inhaled the fragrance of the trees beneath the crescent moon; I spilled like a rose over the waterfall of subredemptive June And as I gather up my belongings and go to see the maiden of the tavern; I leave her something more than words for survival I leave her these coins from Saturn.
