LANITA DUKE: Work w ith the mayor to develop a policy to Save th e trees. Developers would need to include them in plans. MICHAEL DURROW: M andate two replaeeihents for one tre e cut, increase th e administrative process, charge punitive fees, and increase neighborhood rights and appeals. SHANNON ESTABROOK: No tre e s rem oved. None. If a tre e is a clear and p re sen t danger to life, shall b e im m ediately addressed. T his is NOT Los Angeles. T hank you. CHLOE EUDALY: T he choice to destroy our urban canopy shouldn’t be left up to developers. No one should be allowed to take down large, healthy, non-dangerous, non-nuisance tree s w ithout public notice, steep fines (i.e. th e actual value of th e tree), restrictions on percentage of tre e s removed, and 1:1 replacem ent requirem ents. AMANDA FRITZ: I will continue to be th e council’s prim ary cham pion on tree protection. Having helped instigate th e T ree Code as a com m unity activist, it is very frustrating to se e it w atered down by council, subject to developm ent in terests. I will work w ith com m unity organizers and neighbors to stre n g th e n and improve it. DAVID MORRISON: R equire developers to work around th e tre e s o r no p e rm it can be issued. STEVE NOVICK: I support strong m easures to protect tree s greater than 48 inches in diameter, as recently proposed. I think we may need stronger protections in areas of th e city which do not have good tree canopy, and should make it harder to remove tree s to build McM ansions than to do so to add density. ANN SANDERSON: Good policy analysis takes tim e and a lot of listening. I would w ork to modify the tree ordinance to create incentives for keeping tre e s w ith th e goal to m aintain or even increase our urban-canopy. A critical first step would include looking at th e city’s own com m itm ent to tre e s to find ways to avoid devastating losses to our canopy like th e beautiful tre e s on Southw est Lincoln taken down for th e light rail expansion. SUZANNE STAHL: As com m issioner, I will enforce m ore fees w hen contractors o r th e city rem oves trees. T his is a d eterrent. I would increase th e com m unity s voice at City Council, and have different b ureaus collaborate on ways to keep tre e s in place. FRED STEWART: I d o realize th a t m any of th e legacy tre e s w e enjoy today will n eed to be cut down if we are going to develop the housing w e need. We are a growing city and we need room for people to live and work, and th a t m eans we will need to cut down som e tre e s as well as te a r down som e hom es and buildings. Sensible, affordable density is a goal of m ine. We will n o t n eedlessly cut down tre e s if it can be avoided. W hen insufficient affordable housing is available, sh e lte r inside in well-managed safe spaces is th e n ext b e st option for m any folks waiting for services. MICHAEL DURROW: I prefer sm all te n t com m unities in non-residential areas to having te n ts everyw here. T hey should be provided w ith security fencing and honey- pots, too. SHANNON ESTABROOK: Absolutely NOT. T he hom eless need dignity and care. P lease put politicians and millionaires in tents. Thank you. CHLOE EUDALY: Yes. We have to m eet people w here they are in this crisis and right now thousands of people are on th e streets. If we cannot imm ediately provide adequate shelter space o r perm anent affordable housing, supporting safe and stable areas for te n t cities is th e next b e st option. AMANDA FRITZ: No. As th e chief proponent of a perm itted, improved site for Right 2 Dream Too, obviously I do su p p o rt this wonderful organization, and o th e r gatherings of people sheltering and form ing com m unities living tem porarily in tents. T he word “cities” im plies large bureaucratically organized encam pm ents w here thousands of people live perm anently. I reject th e implication th at som e people m ust live outside for long DAVID MORRISON: I think entire parks should be dedicated and program s th a t w ere initiated during th e Occupy m ovem ent th a t engaged th e hom eless would be a positive step. A rt program s, a library, etc. Of course the “hom eless” need to b e individualized ra th e r than referred to as one aggregate group. STEVE NOVICK: I’m not sure anyone “su p p o rts” te n t cities except as a last re so rt, b u t we have seen th a t th ere are m odels th a t w ork like R2D2 and H azelnut Grove. While still looking for solid long-term solutions to our hom elessness problem , we should also su p p o rt those in th e hom eless com m unity th a t are working w ithin th e law to m ake a safe place w ith m inimal negative com m unity impacts. ANN SANDERSON: No, and I believe “understanding we’re going td have stre e t hom elessness” is th e first sign of failure. If we can have a “Vision Zero” for transportation, it is even m ore im perative th a t we have a goal of zero hom elessness. Anything else is unacceptable. SUZANNE STAHL: Yes! T he city should use Right 2 D ream Too as a model. FRED STEWART: No, I feel we can do better. I w ant to develop sh elters for h om eless people. T h ere are o th er options th at we can im m ediately im plem ent to sh elter our hom eless, such as building squad bays in w arehouses.
