S tre e t Roots • July 24-30, 2015 Poetry Drought Page 13 No time by Maddy Brown-Clark by Steve Baratta no time left for counting counting up the planet’s losses for I’m just a soul of a dirt clod vs flying saucers rocket ships high and the moon is full of dust while some time ago robot knew that he was going to rust and the grass that grows so tall has something in mind you see like a mother’s love for the first world that’s bigger than you and me so don’t tempt me with your silver I need just a tooth of gold for these games that you might think are new in this world are already old ha ha, ha ha - All the lawns are dying And the trees don’t give leaf The evergreens aren’t evergreen Their needles are dry and gold The streets are dusty from no r a in The rivers are low once again And my skin is darker than before For the evenings aren’t cool anymore The wind is hot and humid The blackberries are ripe early The pet pant for water And the joggers sweat more than ever They all called for sun. Now they all cry for rain. to the greedy bastards with the devil trapped in the mirror after all, in the everafter look again was it only fear money won’t last for - ever and you’ll know when the souls of the poor are leading the push of the daisies up through the bank vault floor so give me all your lore and your future promised Are you a Veteran experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless?
