Each day I see the beautiful flowers in people’s yards And the desire of people to reach new levels here. Street Roots has been an instrumental piece to my daily survival. It’s not about holding a newspaper in your hand, It’s about reaching out to the hopeless, down and out, the alcoholic, the drug addict And with a kind word, Helping them find the source that can help better their lives. Words alone can never repay Street Roots For the love, compassion and dignity When I was homeless, living in a car for 18 months with two dogs. Street Roots is second to none And Portland, you have a great thing here Called Street Roots. What will they chime When they’re finally right? With their heads To the sky Like a clock Stuck at midnight? “Why didn’t they open their eyes?” Or will they finally figure out That what is burnt By whispers Is vaporized In a shout? A heartbeat against mine, Like gears Turn time. Like the hands on a clock Before midnight, They synchronize. When the system’s hands are tied The rest will say, “Same shit, new day.” ’Cause they may not be broke, But their hours are all the same. The price of the same mistake At the same time of day is the same, But the cost of nothing doesn’t change. R eceive by Rachel D. Advice from homeless: Cease perpetual motion. See. Stop. Give.
