The Street Roots vendor now has a place to call home. Jim spent four months in bed #31 at Doreen’s Place at the Bud Clark Commons. Jim spoke with the volunteers and employees at Doreen’s Place and they were able to get him another bed in the shelter without the often months-long waiting process. From there, he began the process of partnering with a caseworker and finding permanent housing, qualifying for Social Security insurance, filling out applications and staying on waiting lists. After three months of residing at Transition Projects’ Doreen’s Place shelter, Jim moved in to the Hamilton West apartments in SW Portland in early July. Transition Projects helped him with his application fee, security deposit and background check, and they are pro-rating his rent for the next year. He just received a furniture delivery from the Teen Challenge program and with that, officially feels moved in. While Jim says that Transition Projects made him do a lot of initial legwork to find his own place, he is incredibly happy with the experience he had with them. “I give them 150 percent for all that they’ve done.” “I love that I’m inside,” Jim says, and, with a chuckle, compares the size of his studio apartment to, “about eight door fronts.” There is a community of friends that lives in Hamilton West, many from his time in the Transition Projects shelter. One friend gave him a 19 inch color TV, and another lets him borrow his can opener from time to time. The opening paragraphs on our interview with Grace Potter (July 20) incorrectly combined events. Grace Potter performed in April 2011 with Kenny Chesney. In December of 2010 she played the VH1 Diva Salute the Troops benefit. Also, this year she turned 29, not 30 as previously reported.
