16 street roots April 1, 2011 Headline goes here treet Roots has been voted the Best Nonprofit that Businesses Hate to Love in Downtown Portland. S “Hate the leadership, hate the political slant, but we love the concept,” says one business official. After working in the community for more than 12 years, Street Roots has become a staple in front of many businesses throughout downtown Portland. Many feel the organization plays an important role in being an alternative for panhandling and stabilizing street corners where there is a lot illegal activity. “And compared to the canvassers who more or less molest me on the sidewalk, I love Street Roots,” says a business owner in downtown Portland. “The vendors are real nice.” “At first, I just supported the vendors, and then I realized it was actually a great publication,” says someone with the Portland Business Association. “I don’t agree with half of the stories in the paper, but I have to give them credit under my breath from time to time. My boss hates them.” Street Roots, spoke in front of several hundred attendees during the award ceremony, and thanked each and every business for tolerating the vendors in front of their place of operation. " , ' Several activists picketed the ceremony outside a downtown hotel, saying SR was sleeping with the enemy and that their good intentions should be enough to be able to pay thè bills andmake the organization successfril, and weren’t sure why SR would even accept the award of their dirty money.
