Good
readers, w e can finally
b r e a t h e a w e l l - d e s e r v e d sigh
of relief.
The autumnal
e q u i n o x hast e n s toward us, the
sun's a n g l e cants sligh tly
lower, a n d the feeding frenzy
is over.
At this very m o m e n t
the last reti r e d couple
c a r e e n s e a s t w a r d over the
C o a s t Range, their A i r s t r e a m
v e c t o r i n g tow a r d Arizona.
A
h e a r t y G o o d S a m wave bids us
adieu.
T h e only T - s hirts left
ar e the g o l d lame' ones that
say " U n i v e r s i t y of Cannon
Beac h , " n e v e r a popular item.
A r e s i d e n t p o l i c e s up the last
p l a s t i c b a g filled with d irty
Pampers, c h u c k e d over the
f ence by some c h u z z l e w i t and
his w i f e f r o m t h e i r speeding
Camaro.
Th e g e s e l l s c h a f t
c o m m u n i t y onc e a g a i n becomes
gemeinschaft.
On t h e t h i r d of
September, the T u e s d a y after
L a b o r Day, I sli p d o w n the
street just a f t e r dawn.
The
v i l l a g e sleeps, blessedly,
like a t hing s c o u r g e d and
pillaged.
The c r o w d s of
summer have rent and t o r n it.
Th e b loat of wrappers,
bottles, and fast food spew
from t rash r eceptacles and
casc a d e on the street.
Si d e w a l k s and streets are
rutted and b u f f e d by the tramp
of A u g u s t passers-by.
At last the town rests.
By 8:00 a.m. a few locals
c o l l e c t on O s b u r n ' s p orch to
yarn, n urse a cup, and c a t c h a
w e l c o m e glimpse of the fall's
first school bus.
Noon finds
the town in a p o s i t i v e l y
festive mood, neighbors
g r e e t i n g neighbors after
a v o i d i n g the d o w ntown area
d u r i n g J uly and August like a
t o w n s h i p v i s i t e d by Ebola.
E v e n the shopkeepers, after
c a c h e i n g away t heir summer
booty, pause to e x c hange
pleasantries.
Th e place
fairly b u r b l e s and chortles.
Huzzah!
T h e y ' r e gone!
In the
q u i e t village, the lion sleeps
tonight.
R a i n c h a r m s us by Fri d a y
afternoon, and all's r ight
w i t h the world.
Even the most
c h u r l i s h c oast trolls, myself
a mong them, s m i r k as a mo d e s t
w i n d - d r i v e n squall k icks in at
dusk.
In a w e e k or t w o the
geese w i l l g host by in the
l a t e - n i g h t sky.
Chantrelles
have bee n spotted.
Shoot.
A few good
friends w i t h stories, some
s e a s o n e d a l d e r in the old wood
stove.
Howdy, Winter, take
your shoes off and sit down
here n e x t to the fire!
