The v i l l a g e sleeps, blessedly, like a t hing s c o u r g e d and pillaged. The c r o w d s of summer have rent and t o r n it. Th e b loat of wrappers, bottles, and fast food spew from t rash r eceptacles and casc a d e on the street. Si d e w a l k s and streets are rutted and b u f f e d by the tramp of A u g u s t passers-by. At last the town rests. By 8:00 a.m. a few locals c o l l e c t on O s b u r n ' s p orch to yarn, n urse a cup, and c a t c h a w e l c o m e glimpse of the fall's first school bus. Noon finds the town in a p o s i t i v e l y festive mood, neighbors g r e e t i n g neighbors after a v o i d i n g the d o w ntown area d u r i n g J uly and August like a t o w n s h i p v i s i t e d by Ebola. E v e n the shopkeepers, after c a c h e i n g away t heir summer booty, pause to e x c hange pleasantries. Th e place fairly b u r b l e s and chortles. Huzzah! T h e y ' r e gone! In the q u i e t village, the lion sleeps tonight. R a i n c h a r m s us by Fri d a y afternoon, and all's r ight w i t h the world. Even the most c h u r l i s h c oast trolls, myself a mong them, s m i r k as a mo d e s t w i n d - d r i v e n squall k icks in at dusk.
