B2 Columbia Gorge News Wednesday, July 21, 2021 www.columbiagorgenews.com Central Gorge Master Gardener Plant Clinics resume in person Gardeners will also at the Hood River County Fair, July 22- 24, from noon until 6 p.m., under the trees in front of the Community Building. Stop by and get re-acquainted! ••• If you’ve got a home gar- dening issue that you’d like some suggestions for, Master Gardeners are trained and here to help. Master Gardener volunteers will gather information from you about your gardening issue, inspect the sample that you provide and do research in order to provide you with more information and sug- gested solutions. When bringing in a plant sample, a freshly gathered one is best. Please also bring a healthy sample of the same plant if possible. For the past 16 months, Master Gardener Plant Clinics have been conducted virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. Following the most current state guide- lines, Master Gardeners are now able to answer garden- ers’ questions in person at Plant Clinics. These Plant Clinics will occur through October at Ace Hardware, 250 E. Jewett Blvd., White Salmon, on the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Hood River Supply, 1995 12th St., Hood River, on all Saturdays except the first Saturday of the month, also from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central Gorge Master damage are also helpful. For pest problems, please bring in the pest for accurate identification and control suggestions. It may be neces- sary to search at night with a flashlight to catch nocturnal pests. For other pests, collect leaves, stems and branch- es where the pests have attacked the plant. Put your samples in a clean plastic bag or other disposable con- tainer and bring them to the Plant Clinic of your choice. You can expect your question(s) to be researched and receive a reply with diagnosis and suggestions that will empower you to make an informed decision in about a week, possibly two, depending on the volume of client questions that are being researched at the time. Contributed photo Local wins WAAAM raffle: 1969 Chevy Custom Stepside Hood River local Brett Monson won the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museums’ 1969 Chevy Custom Stepside Raffle Truck during the WAAAM Traffic Jam Car Show on July 10. Monson was not present at the time of the drawing, but as soon as he found out, he was quick to arrive and claim his prize after a short crash course on the ins and outs of old automobiles, said a press release. A self-proclaimed guy- who-never-wins-anything, Monson enjoys the living history nature of WAAAM and is excited to be taking a part of it home with him. “WAAAM still has a long way to go before fundraising for our building expansion is complete but this raffle helped us raise just over $22,000,” said Museum Assistant Director Stephanie Hatch. The 1969 Chevy Custom Stepside Raffle Truck was donated to the museum with the intent to be sold or raffled to help with expand- ing the museum’s facility to further its existing educa- tional opportunities and become an even better asset to the region. The museum is located on the Hood River Airport at 1600 Air Museum Road. For more information, visit www. waaamuseum.org. WAAAM Traffic Jam Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum, Hood River, held its Ninth Annual Traffic Jam fundraising event July 10. Organizers reported that the show went well, with a good “middle-of-the-road turnout,” which left them pleasantly surprised — organizers weren’t sure the event would happen this year, given fluctuating COVID restrictions, until about a month prior. Activities during the WAAAM Traffic Jam include both Automobile and Aircraft Restoration Shop tours, engine demonstrations and WAAAM automobile rides. Hood River Saddle Club fundraiser sale Aug. 14 It’s time again for Hood River Saddle Club’s annual sale (saddles/tack, house- hold goods, furniture and much more). Proceeds promote horseback riding as a sport and are used for clubhouse/grounds’ repairs and improvements. “In kind” donations of sale items (in excellent condi- tion, please!) are welcomed and are tax deductible, as HRSC is a 501c3 non-profit. Bring them to the club- house on Wednesday, Aug. 4 through Monday, Aug. 9 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The sale takes place at HRSC, 4384 Belmont Drive (corner of Country Club and Belmont) on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. GLENWOOD NEWS Rodeo round-up: Local students compete ■ By Mary Pierce Rodeo is still a big deal here in Glenwood. Emma Patterson, daughter of Shane and Billie, just returned from competing in the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca, Nev. While she didn’t place in her events, the experience was priceless and she is look- ing forward to the start of the 2021-2022 Junior High School Rodeo season this fall. Emma, we are all very proud of you for qualifying for that rodeo and represent- ing your rodeo team, family, and Glenwood community down there. As Emma returns home, Joslyn Arnold, daughter of Casey and Bo, has head- ed east to compete in the National High School Rodeo Finals in Lincoln, Neb., taking place July 18-24. Joslyn will have Mary Pierce several other members of the Goldendale High School Rodeo Team there competing, too, including Blake Masden, for- mer Glenwood kid and son of Lacey Masden and Colby Masden, and grandson of Kelly and Bill Henderson. We’ll all be keeping track of events and cheering them on from this far distance. You can go to www.nhsra.com/ events/nhsfr-2021 to check on daily results and we hope the parents will all post daily updates. What an exciting time for all those cowgirls and cowboys. Good luck, Joslyn and Blake, and have a wonderful time there. Another young cowboy competing there is not from Glenwood, but has deep roots here. Shane Scott, son of Amy and Shawn Roggenkamp and Trevor and Courtney Scott, had an amazing high school rodeo season as a member on an Oregon team. Shane, who is the grandson of Oop and Diane Burgin and Marilyn and Mike Scott, recently won the Oregon State High School Rodeo bullriding championship. He also was chosen as rookie of the year and was the recipient of the Todd Stoops Memorial Bullriding Buckle. Courtney tells us Shane worked throughout last fall and this spring to qualify for the Oregon State Finals, where only the top 20 in each event are allowed to showcase their skills. The bulls were tough at the State Finals, but Shane rode all but one of his bulls to take first place in State and qualify for the National High School Rodeo Finals. He finished fourth in saddle bronc riding so will also compete in that event. What an amazing year. We’ll be cheering you on from here in Glenwood, Shane, and wish you the best of luck in Lincoln. Not everything here is about rodeo. We are proud to share the news that Andrew McFall, son of Sara and Adam, has once again earned a place on the President’s List at Neumont College of Computer Science in Salt Lake City, Utah. To be named to this list, a student must have achieved a grade point average of 3.7 to 4.0 for the quarter. We here at home continue to be so proud of you, Andy. Congratulations. The Glenwood Grange is in the process of trans- ferring ownership of the beautiful, historic Mt. Adams Cemetery to the Glenwood Cemetery District.
