Com m unity School Notes

Thank You Steve Pine!
People frequently ask, "W hat is a Community
School?" W hile there arecertainly longer and more
complicated answers, perhaps the simplest answer
is that it is the creation of coordinated programs and
partnerships which strengthen and nurture a
community. Each community that undertakes to
fulfill this concept goes about it in ways which are
specific to its own needs and assets, and each
community school must remain flexible to changes
in those needs and assets. The grant proposal for
our Butte Falls Community School outlines a number
of programs, each of which fall into one of four
components: Life-Long Learning, Family Strengths,
Community Fun & Enrichment, and Sustainability.
W hile still in the early stages of our Ford Family Grant,
we must now go forward with one of the largest and
most important programs of life-long learning,
Community Education. As school is about to start
we're busy planning a variety of activities, including
Fun Nights and Outdoor Recreation event is time to
open the school and our school district’s resources to
the community, and begin developing our community
education program.
W hat is "community education?" Put most simply, it
means making our community a place where learning
and personal enrichment opportunities are
accessible to all in a collaborative atmosphere. It
means maximizing our educational resources,
promoting community involvement and leadership,
inter-generational interaction, and learning from each
other. This means that the doors of our schools are
open to us all, and that we all have things to teach one
another. Our school facilities will be open during and
beyond the traditional school day to provide
academic, extracurricular, recreational, family support
services, and work force training and/or preparation
for all ages. The range of class offerings in
community school education programs is virtually
without limits, ranging from such things as unusual
hobbies, cooking, quilting, small engine repair, to
computer skills, art, and literature. Community
education means this: for every need or wild dream, a
class may be created. For the regular daytime high

and positive attitude w e m ade it
through a year filled w ith
uncertainty and despair. W e cam e
through w ith hope for the future, &
are looking forw ard to the new
school year.
By changing & rearranging,
num erous hours of grant w riting, &
envisioning each student & staff
m em ber at his or her full potential
he has given B.F.S.D . the fortitude
to not just get by, but to succeed
in these tim es w here education has
taken a back seat in priorities. His
leadership has encouraged all of us
to believe w e can succeed.
W e w ould like to say thank you to
Steve Pine for his dream and for
not being afraid to take on an
im possible job. W e w ould like to
say thank you for rem inding us
that change is inevitable &
uncertain, but that it can also be
strong & positive. W e w ould like to
say thank you to Steve Pine for
your visions of hope for the
students, staff & com m unity of
Butte Falls.
