Butte Falls High School Equestrian Team Update

The Butte Falls Equestrian Team has begun its
second season. It has been a very exciting time for
us. Cammie Moody arranged for us to use the Rogue
Elk Arena in Elk Creek and that has been wonderfull
Even on the dreariest days, we have a comfortable
place to practice. I would like to thank everyone who
has helped us, but as we are still looking for
contributions, so I will save that for a later edition.
The raffles were a big success: Alvin
Thompson won the 50/50 raffle, Sheila Gieseke won
the Smoked Turkey and Zane Smith won the cord of
wood, which he donated to a family in need in the
valley. See, people really do winl
The parent organization, SOHSET, will be
putting on a scholarship auction on February 22nd at
the Expo. Stan Dupree will be the auctioneer and we
hope it will be a big success. The team will be
approaching local businesses and artists for tax
deductible donations. It will only benefit our team
directly if we go to State Finals again this year, which
we have a really good chance of doing! The Finals will
be held at the Expo this year. If you have any ideas or
donations, feel free to call me at 865-4370.
This has truly been a collaborative effort, our
philosophy is the more the merrier! Our practices are
open and if anyone would like to watch, double check
with me because we are trying to do some practices at
the Expo as well. Watching these girls learn and grow
as a team has been a marvelous experience.
One of our coaches, Kathy Linville, brings
with her a wealth of experience from her years in 4H,
where she won the prestigious Dad Potter Award and
Vai Hackett has been a wonderful motivator and
teacher. We are actually collaborating with two High
Schools. South Medford is sharing Vai with us and we
are co-opting with Prospect, so that Tamra Hunt can
ride with us. The rest of the team consists of Jamie
Nelson, Roxanne Gieseke and Heather Shimers. Of
course, all the parents bring their individual talents as
well and have been a great source of information and
inspiration.
Our first Meet will be February 14th, 15th and
16th at the Expo. Tentatively, the cow events and
gaming will be held on Friday starting at 3PM,
performance classes on Saturday and Drill Team
Competition on Sunday. We don't have a Drill Team
this year, but three of our riders are only Freshmen.
