I don't know how to w rite this w ith out saying
'awesome'a w hole bunch of tim es, so here goes!
This trip was so awesom e. I m et so m any awe-
som e people, and saw so m any awesom e sites and
structures; tons of art - from structures and
stone, to paintings and draw ings, to stain glass
windows, etcetera. N ot only that but I got to
experience so m any awesom e and thoughtful
debates and argum ents w ith so m any different
people from so m any different places. I got to
see and m eet Senators and S ecret S ervice
peolple, the president's dog, and m em bers of
the NYPD, as well as people that we m et on the
streets and in restaurants. I even got to m eet
Andy from M ichigan. I had an awesom e tim e.
The people w ere awesom e and this is one point
w here M rs. LeFever contributed a lot! W e m et
all sorts of different people everyw here we went,
M rs. LeFever started conversations w ith random
people everyw here we w ent, including policem en
and taxi drivers! W e got insider's views from
locals, and outsider's views from tourists. The
people we m et varied by occupation, opinion, race,
sex, and a whole lot m ore. W hether she was
asking directions, or com m enting on attributes,
or on the sites, or just asking a question she al-
ways found out som ething ana learned som ething
about the person, including their nam e.

A fter arriving at the Baltim ore airport, we
started the trip by driving to New York C ity,
w here we took in sites like the S tatue of Lib-
erty, B attery Park, and G round Zero. W e got to
go to the Broadway show Les Miserables. G et-
ting to see the play was a great experience be-
cause w e're putting on this play and we got to
see our different characters play their parts,
W e stayed in New York for a couple of days and
got to see so. W e also stopped in Philadelphia
and saw the Liberty Bell. Then we drove down to
W ashington D.C. for the Close Up program ,
W e arrived in W ashington D.C. ana checked
into our hotel room s at tne H otel Pennsylvania.
C ody and I room ed w ith tw o fellow s from
Barcelona, Spain. Their nam es w ere Luis and
Xavier. W e started out the week by doing a
w orkshop and seeing a few of the m em orials, in
eluding tne Jefferson, FDR, Lincoln, Korean W ar,
Vietnam W ar, and m any others. W e got to see
C apitol H ill and take a tour of congress and we
got to go to the W hite House. A few of the
other things that we did during the Close Up
program w ere attend several w orkshops and
sem inars w ith topics ranging from copyrights to
N ational Security. O ur group got to go to the C-
Span C enter w ith som e people from the form er
Russian States. W e had so m uch fun. I would be
to do this again if I could.

Close up was the m ost fun I've had in a long
tim e. In N ew York we w ent on the double-decker
tour bus and saw the entire city. W e w ent by
G round Zero, the S tatue of Liberty and we w ent
up to the.top of the Em pire S tate building for
an incredible view of the city at night. The best
thing in N ew Y ork w as w hen w e saw Les
Miserables on Broadway. In Philadelphia we w ent
on a carriage ride around the historical part of
tow n. W e also w ent and saw the Liberty Bell.
W hen we w ent to D.C. we w ere so busy it was
unbelievable. W e stayed

Explaining the Close Up trip to New York C ity

To think that a six teens and one adventurous advisor from Butte Falls are
._ capable of successfully traveling from O regon to W ashington DC, New York,
T7 Philadelphia, and back seems outrageous! Especially when traveling in a rent-a-
j/ car w ith M rs. LeFever at the w heel and Cody Kelly and I navigating w ith direc-
I tions from M ap Q uest! W hat an am azing experience! N ever in a m illion years
/ did I think that I would have the opportunity to m eet so m any interesting indi-

Si to travel back east at least once in their life. I w ill rem em ber m y experience
