What the flag means to me.

From the first stitch of the A m erican Flag,
the nation knew it w ould be our sym bol of hope,
freedom , courage, and unity for centuries to
com e. This red, w hite, and blue m asterpiece,
created by B etsy R oss, has stood strong
through w ars, devastation, hardships, and in
the happiest of tim es.

tem ber 11, 2001 as our country's greatest
landm arks fell to the ground. The efforts and
determ ination of the firem en, police, doctors,
and volunteers helping to clean-up after the
disaster show s the pride and adm iration for
w hich the A m erican Flag stands. Patriotic

show ed our independence and freedom from
England. The look of the flag has changed

A s th e W orld T rade C enter fell to the
ground, a priest rushed in to save the souls
of the people know ing his life w as in danger,
W hen his body w as found a single A m erican
flag w as draped over him and the firem en
took him to his chapel and laid him on the
altar.
M om ents later th o se sam e
f iref ighters placed the A m erican flag on top
of the rubble. T hat picture w as in every
m agazine, new spaper, and on every televi ­
sion.
T hese people are the real heroes, not som e
sports star th at so m any people look up to.
O ur firefighters and police are the real he-
roes of our nation. T hey stand tall, and hold
their heads high in respect for our country,
T hey live up to the saying, “ I'm proud to be
an A m erican."
T hose fifty stars, and thirteen stripes
of the flag represents a bond betw een i ev-
ery state in the U nited S tates; together w e
have the saying, "U nited W e Stand." N ow
m ore then ever the patriotic songs of the
A m erican flag our blasted over the radio,
on television, and even on posters; songs such
as “ A m erica the B eautiful" and “ I'm proud
to be an A m erican." W ords of th e “ S tar
Spangled B anner" never really m eant too
m uch to m e, but now they m ean so m uch m ore
and I know th at by the daw n's early light,
our flag w ill be standing tall for all th e w orld
to see.
