THE BUTTE FALLS AND PROSPECT RANGER DISTRICTS W ISH YOU THE M ERRIEST AND SAFEST OF HOLIDAYS!! daneff Stockebrarad O f f ic e M a n a g e r The Fishing Line- by Dave Curphey Now that I have put m y old W inchester away until next hunting season, m y favorite fishing pole has been seeing a little action. I ’ve been to the Upper Rogue a few tim es but have yet to land a salm on or steel head, although there are a fair num ber of fish in the river. John and Susan at Pat ’s Hand Tied Flies tell m e the salm on are hitting on little corkys and roe, various spinners, such as a M e p p s and Kast- m asters. The steel head have been hitting on nightcrawlers or roe. I cam e hom e form fishing em pty handed last weekend w ith all the excuses w hy I hadn ’t caught anything. The water was too l o w and clear, w asn ’t the right tim e of day, there w asn ’t an overcast etc. Then, m y w ife re m inded m e of a place I hadn ’t been in a long tim e and that I should try it. So, I went, and sure enough the first one I landed was a nice salm on about tw elve pounds. The next one I landed was som e red snapper and then a package of shrim p. You know , I never have been skunked at Safeway. W hat a fishing hole! Several weeks ago, I stopped o BA f f a t L o s t Creek Lake and caught a fe w tr o u t u s in g rainbow pow er bait. The fish were about 1 4 inches and caught by the spillw ay. At W illow Lake the fishing was a little slow , but the fish I caught were nice. The yellow perch are getting bigger, but slow to bite. There I have been using nightcraw lers and fishing them on the bottom . In the near future I plan on fishing the upper end of Lost Creek Lake where I usually catch som e nice sized Germ an Brown Trout. For them I use sm aller Rapalas or drift a whole nightcrawler. Also, by next m onth the w inter run steel head should be m aking their way to the Upper Rogue River. So, until next tim e, Happy Holidays to all and good luck on your fishing. P.S.
