The readers and advertisers of The P ortland Labor Pre*s. we hope, will notice with as much satisfaction as we announce it the enlargem ent of the pa per this week from six to seven col umns. T here has been m ore o r less com plaint in the past from certain m em bers of organized labor that the paper was too small to create notice, and in a measure this fact proved a draw back to its progress. T his has been overcom e, however, by persistent labor and perseverance on the p art of the m anagem ent, aided by a good fol lowing of stanch and true-blue union men and women. T hrough the agencies ju st m entioned the L abor P ress has I rospered in spite of the petty m outh ing* of a few disturbers in the ranks of organized labor. \ \ e have all the tim e felt that the held was here for the existence and m aintenance of a live labor paper. We have also felt that the merchants in the city would patronize a paper of this kind whose policy was conservative and judicious. W hile the paper heretofore has not given the news service that som e have expected, yet it' started in a hum ble way and has never been overburdened by financial aid or facilities to m ake of it a m etropolitan daily. The very best has been extracted from the re sources furnished, ami we are glad to announce that union men and wom en are warm ing up to the fact th at a la bor paper of more than ordinary w orth can be maintained here, and they have awakened to the fact that the only way to do it is to support it. A business man will m eet you m ore than hall way. If he thinks that the la > ir paper is read by the arm y of toi*Jl(g purchasers he will not hesi- U buy space i n thaj paper for the purpose of selling his goods. W hile the increase in the size of the paper is small, yet it is an evidence of progress, and as fast as the revenues of the business will permit, further im provem ent will he made. T he paper is run in the interest of organized la bor—not for one union n o r one man or set of men but for organized labor everywhere alike. ' It is the purpose of the paper to de vote its columns to labor news and items that will educate the w orking classes along the lines of unionism . After this is met and the toiling m asses are fully informed as to their p u r chasing power, and they conclude by their patronage they need a larger p a per, The Labor Press can then add a general new departm ent. And the m ost expedient way to do this is to sub scribe for the paper, read it through, advertisem ents and all. and then tell y our grocer or m erchant that you want him to place an advertisem ent in yotir paper, and if he don't do it, look in the paper, go to a merchant who does a d vertise in it. and tell him why you patronize him. All tin-, time don't lose sight of the union lal>el when purchasing. If you ask for it. demand it. and refuse to buy unless it i^ upon the goods, there will be no trouble in filling the stores with union goods, after which the m ainte nance of a labor paper in the City of P ortland will be unparatively easy. T he management of the L ab o r Press feels elated in K ing able to announce improvem ent in a business way, and th an k s the friends anil patro n s of the paper for their manifest interest in a m oral and financial way. T o the few who are endeavoring to ham per the paper by false and idle ru m o r we can only extend a m agnani m ous hand o f fellowship, and say: “ Have pjty <»n them, L ord, for they know not what they do.” We tru st they will eventually rise above selfish interests and narrow lanes, and walk abroad upon the ...m m ons of intellect ual reason, commensurate with the g reat and ever broadening question of organized labor. THW FA I.I.M V OR.' MI.IOT. President Eliot, of H arvard U nivers ity, in a lecture delivered before the Economic Club, of Bo ton, last T ues day. denounced the labor unions of the country as opposed to the education of voting men and for what he term ed ' their fight against the development of manly instincts.” In closing he c h a r acterized the strike breaker, o r “scab,” as he called him, as a good type of the American hero.” He said present con ditions indicated that many years must pass before the labor question is sat isfactorily solved. Both sides must make concessions and adopt some plan. The principal objection to the labor unions from tl^e edssc»|or‘s point of view, he said. Was' Ih eir o b je c tio n to young men becom ing com petent me & chanics, and that they do p re te n t this T he m ost decisive n iv ie taken yet is evident from the fact that all unions to end the war between the Am erican endeavor to limit the num ber of ap-1 L abor U nion and the Am erican l eder- prentices em ployed in any industry. Mr. ation of L abor will be m ade this week E lio t's objection to the labor union m the N ational C onvention of Am eri- was. he said, th at the object of the can Federation of L abor at New O r- union seem ed to be to work as fe w ’ leans. The war between the Am erican hours as ppssibtc, produce as little as Federation of L abor and the A m eri possible during th at tim e and to re can L abor U nion, then the W estern ceive as much m oney as possible for L abor U nion, arose a year ago over the T he W estern the service given. This attitude was , question of affiliation, in effect nothing m ore than a constant Federation of M iners supports the l-u- tight against the developm ent of manly b o r U nion, of which it is the parent instincts. H e said lie had a profound j body.
