project
The basement of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Hillsboro is one big
room, cool, dean and filled with sixty busy migrant children; toddlers
hugging dolls, small boys riding new "trikes," and young girls finger
painting. You w ill find children making paper hats and listening to music,-
all young people free, calm, and industrious.
St. Matthew's Day Care Center grew as a community project. The Valley
Migrant League child care program this year had funds only for $3.00
a day per child.
Hillsboro knew they needed a child care center and the community was
willing to help. Father Gelinas of St. Matthew's Catholic Church gave space
for the center in the church school. Utilities are also a gift.

Bob Warner contacted other churches for aide and support. Judy Coch
ran was chosen as VML Day Care Supervisor for Hillsboro. She began
registering children for day care and arranging for licensing of centers
and foster homes. Vera Greger, director of the St. Matthew child care
center began preparations to receive the children. Bob Greger took charge
of transportation for St. Matthew's Center. A bus was donated by the
Lutheran Church in Beaverton. Four men volunteers, John Lamb, Dick Stahl,
Joe Brugato, and Bart O'Shea from St. Cecilias in Beaverton give four hours
a day to take the children from the camps to the center and then home.
Thre Migrant Ministry donated $200.00 to St. Matthew's Center and the
North Plains Center. The Valley Volunteers have lent money charging no
interest. The Inter-Church Center of Portland and Mrs. Johnson of the Valley
Volunteers collected food, toys, clothing and different supplies for the
children.
College Work Study students and VISTA volunteers with VML have
helped with transportation and care of children.

El subterráneo de la Iglesia Católica de San Mateo en Hillsboro es una
sola pieza grande, limpia y repleta con sesenta niños con sus nuevos trici
clos y niñas pequeñas pintando con sus dedos. Ahi encontrará a niños y
niñas fabricando sombreros de papel y escuchando música; todos peque
ños, libres felices e industriosos.

El Centro "Day Care" de San Mateo nació como un proyecto de la comu
nidad. El programa para cuidado del niño del Valley Migrant League este
año solamente tiene fondos para gastar $3 por cada niño.
La ciudad de Hillsboro sabía que necesitaba un centro para cuidar niños
y estaba dispuesta a ayudar. El Padre Gelinas de la Iglesia Católica de
San Mateo ofreció espacio en la escuela de la iglesia. Los útiles también
fueron donados.
Bob Warner se puso en contacto con otras iglesias para obtener ayuda.
