Reyna VAW. has n ew job counseling and placement department By Rick Simon The Valley Migrant League now has a new department. It is called Job Development, Counseling and Placement. The purpose of this new service is to help farm work ers find and keep good jobs. During the last year the V.M.L. has found that farm workers often say that their most urgent needs are learning a job skill and qualify- ing for a better job. The Adult Edu cation department has provided training for these farm workers, and many have studied in classes ranging from typing, homemaking, and cooking, to welding and auto mechanics. After improving their skills, these farm workers asked, "We have studied for a year, now what w ill we do?" The new job counseling depart ment w ill try to answer these farm workers with jobs. There are six Job Counselors, and they w ill work full time finding jobs for people who want to stay in Oregon all year. Among the many things that a Job Counselor can do for a settling farm worker are the following: 1. Provide group and individual counseling to help farm workers understand what kinds of jobs they w ill be able to get and what kinds of jobs they w ill best be able to perform. 2. Contact employers and find out where the job possibilities are in the various Valley Migrant League areas. 3. Follow up newly placed farm workers and help avoid any prob lems on the new job. Provide coun seling and placement department change from seasonal farm work to full time employment. 4. Direct farm workers who want to settle to training and schooling which w ill prepare them to get a steady job. Besides the Job Counselor in each area, there w ill be an ex-farm El VML ahora tiene un departa mento nuevo. Después de mejorar su técnica, estos trabaja dores de agricultura preguntaron, "Hace un año que hemos estudiado, ahora ¿qué hacemos?" Recently the V.M.L. has heard people complain that it did not do them any good to study in our courses. One person said, "What good w ill it do me to study for a G.E.D. (high school) certificate? I won't be able to get a job later anyway." This should no longer be true. Recientemente el VML ha recibi do quejas de los que han estudiado diciendo que el estudio les resultó inútil. Uno dijo, "¿Qué beneficio puedo obtener después de haber ganado el diploma de high school (G.E.D.)? No puedo conseguir mejor empleo después." Ya esto no debe ser cierto. Con los servicios del departamento de Job Counseling and Placement, ahora los trabajadores agrícolas encontrarán establecerse y conse guir buen empleo más fácilmente. Six new job counselors (Continued from page 1) STAN HUSHBECK, a former sec ondary school teacher in Forest Grove, a VML adult education in structor, and an area teacher in Hillsboro, is presently a Job Voca tional Counselor in Salem. Stan graduated from Oregon College of Education (OCE) and re ceived a degree in physical science. Stan is married and has three daughters, Carolyn, 9; Teresa, 5; and Yolanda, 1 1/2. He has worked as a Job Counsel or for two weeks and has already placed 9 people. HANS RADTKE was born in Ger many and came to the U.S. with his family when 11 years old to live in Oregon City. Hans attended Portland State College and gradu ated in economics. After receiving his degree, Hans joined the Peace Corps and spent two years of service in Colombia, S.A. Now, he w ill be working as a Job Counselor at the Jefferson Sa tellite Center. He also attended CAUSE, a summer school program at the University of Oregon which was a training course for counseling dis advantaged youths. He is assigned to the Hillsboro VML Center.
