Susan Maltby, a student at Reed
College, is working at the Salem
Opportunity Center. She speaks
Spanish and often goes out to the
fields for direct contact w ith mi­
grants. Susan was hired through the
President's Commission to Hire the
Handicapped, as she is blind.
A pot luck picnic at the Oregon
coast w ill be held on Sunday. It is
sponsored by the Salem Opportu­
nity Center fo r farm worker families
in the Salem area.
David Martinez is a VISTA volun-
ter at the VML satellite center in St.
Paul. But he comes to Woodburn
twice a week to tutor tw o boys of
junior high school age. The Wood­
burn O pportunity Center, in coop­
eration with- the Marion County
Juvenile Court, is sponsoring these
private classes. The tw o boys are
progessing w ell w ith their junior
high school studies,
"Affluence and Poverty" is the
topic of Ken Killary's class, the di­
rector o f the Sandy area. Mr. Killary
taught at the Presbyterian Synod
School, this week. He taught tw o
classes which consisted o f 16 adults
in the morning and 30 adults in the
afternoon.
Spanish classes have begun at
the Salem center for staff members.
Sam Hernandez, the assistant area
supervisor, is the teacher. He says
that there are some openings for
the general public.
An informal girls softball game
w ill be held at the Settlemier Park
in Woodburn on Sunday. VISTAs,
program aides and any girls inter­
ested in playing are welcome to
participate. They w ill begin at 1:00
in the afternoon.
The new VML radio program had
its first broadcast Thursday, July
28th. Listen to KSLM 1390 at 7:30
p.m. Moderator Tom Reed inter­
views the W oodburn staff.
Noticias en breves
Susan M altby, estudiante de la
Universidad de Reed está traba­
jando en el Centro de Oportunidad
de Salem. Habla español y de vez
en cuando va a los campos para
tener contacto directo con los traba­
jadores migratorios. Susan fué em­
pleada através de la comisión del
presidente para emplear a los des­
ventajados físicamente, como ella
es ciega.
Una merienda "p o t luck" en la
playa de Oregon se llevará a cabo
el próximo domingo. Está patro­
cinada por el Centro de O portuni­
dad de Salem para las familias de
los trabajadores de agricultura del
área de Salem.
David Martínez es un voluntario
de VISTA en el centro satélite de
St. Paul. Pero se va a W oodburn
dos veces por semana para ayudar
enseñar a dos jóvenes de la escuela
secundaria. El Centro de O portuni­
dad de W oodburn, en cooperación
con la Corte Juvenil del Condado
de Marión, patrocina estas clases
particulares. Lps dos jóvenes siguen
