i Record-Courier THURSDAY, APRIL 7,2016 Violet Irene Hall News of Record March 1926-March 2016 Violet Irene Hall died peacefully in her home on March 28, 2016 surrounded by her family. Her big heart finally gave out after 90 years. She was someone who was a friend to everybody. There were no strangers in her life, only friends she hadn’t met yet. Violet “Vi” Hall was bom in Onalaska, Wash. March 19,1926 to Rogel and Myrtle Music. She grew up with her parents and brothers in the Tacoma, Wash. area. After her father’s tragic death, at age 12 Violet became her mother’s biggest helper. During the depression, Violet learned to be frugal and became one of the worlds best at reusing and recycling, a passion she maintained throughout her life. She met her future husband, Edward Hall, while liv ing in Haines, Ore. in 1944. They were married February 9, 1945. Vi, Ed and the four older kids lived in Haines until 1961 before moving to Hermiston, where Dale and Kathy were bom. In the house on Baxter Road they raised their six children, instilling in them their values of loye, compassion, integrity, honesty, and hard work. Their home was the neighborhood gathering place for kids who often enjoyed a sweet treat hot out of the oven. It was warm and welcoming home full of books, games and puzzles for all of the kids to enjoy and learn from. Violet believed in the value of education. She was a lifelong learner and passed this value on to all of her children. She was very proud of her 20 plus years as an OSU Mom, serving as the local chapter’s organizer and Historian. Violet wasn’t just a supporter, she was a cheerleader of her children’s dreams, their education and all their various endeavors. Violet was a volunteer extraordinaire. She was a leader of 4-H, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls. Countless hours were logged at school fiinctions helping out where ever needed. She helped at blood drives for over 50 years and she believed in donating blood and was proud of her eight gallon certificate. Later in life, never missing an opportunity to help others, she volunteered at the Hermiston Senior Center. Always proud of her families pioneering roots Violet worked many hours on the family’s genealogy, recording her family’s history for fiiture generations. In the early 70s, Violet was active with the original Land Use Planning efforts in Umatilla and was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary. Learning about the areas geology captivated her interest enough for her to enroll in classes at BMCC and to join the Hat-Rock Rock Hounds exploring the area, the region and the states geology. Additionally she was able to use her experience as a newspaper reporter and her love and talent as a writer to good use writing the Rock Hounds newsletter. Violet held various jobs over her life. At the age of 18, she became a painter’s helper in the Shipyards during WW2, helping with the war efforts. She worked at the Umatilla Army Depot in 1943 and again in the 1970s. Violet was a reporter for the Record-Courier in Baker when she lived in Haines during the 1950s and again in recent years, recount ing and reporting on her many memories of life in Haines. She worked at Walchli Farms on the potato line, as a custodian at Armand Larive Junior High School and McCabe’s Café. She was also a lifeguard and water safety instructor. The job she loved the most was being a home maker, as she lived her life for her family. Violet was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward I Hall, and her brothers Ronald and Ervin Music. She is survived by her six children, Martie (Myrtle) Lamont (Sam) of Fairbanks, Alaska, Edward Hall (Pat) of Littleton, Colorado, Timothy Hall of Seattle, Wash., Bruce Hall (Suzie Stacy) of Vancouver, Wash., Dale Hall (Valerie) of Lebanon, Ore., Kathleen Dopps (Ken) of Hermiston, Ore., Sister-in-Law Lois Music of Baker City, 10 grandchildren, 21 great grand children, 5 great-great children and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and-her large extended-chosen family. 7 There will be a memorial service for Violet, Sunday April 3, at 2 p.m. at the Bums Mortuary Chapel, 685 W. Hermiston Avenue, Hermiston, Ore. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Ore. Accidents March 21 - at 10:31 am, on Interstate 84, milepost 332 eastbound: A green Ford Focus driven by Linda Fairbanks, of Boise, Ida, struck the guardrail while • negotiating a curve. There were no reported injuries and the vehicle was towed. March 26 - at 6:15 p.m, on Interstate 84, milepost 334 eastbound: A pickup, driven by Bryan Lavette, 46, of Nampa, Ida, pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with another pickup was travelling the freeway eastbound when the weight of the trailer began to make the trailer sway at milepost 334. Lavette lost control of lite vehicle and it impacted the guardrail on the right shoulder ás it spun around 180 degrees, coming to a rest facing west. The impact caused damage to both the vehicle and the trailer, but Lavette was able to get turned back around, and he drove to the next rest area to make repairs. Lavette then left the rest area without reporting the crash. He was stopped by Oregon State Police at milepost 341 and issued a citation for Fail to Perform Duties of Driver in Accident with Property Damage. There were no reported injuries. Kochsmeier ordered to pay restitution to victims: $120 to Kicks Sportswear, $29.99 to D & B Supply and $24.99 to Radioshack. ¿Record-Courier (USPS 457-720) COMBINED WITH NORTH POWDER NEWS HAINES, OREGON 97833 BAKER COUNTY NEWSPAPER Laurie Kandick Woodworth Dec. 1926-April 2016 On April 1,2016 our beloved husband, father, grandpa and Papa Laurie passed away at the age of 89 after living a long, productive and mean ingful life rich with the blessings of his loving family. His kindness, generosity, honor and strong work ethic defined his life. He was never one to take the easy way out, setting high expectations for his family as well as himself; often leading and teaching by example. He was always more concerned about his family than himself and worked hard to provide for their well-being. Laurie was bom in Buena, Wash, on December 15,1926 to Cyril and Margaret Woodworth and relocated to Grandview, Wash, in 1936. His parents purchased farmland on what is now known as Woodworth Road. This was significant to the family as the original Woodworth Road is in Aylesford, Nova Scotia named in honor of Laurie’s great-grandfather, Abner. As a high school student he played on the football team, was an undefeated Golden Gloves boxer, FFA president as well as student body vice-president, graduating from Grandview High School in 1945. He married Cora Colleen Klippert in 1949 and began dairy farming in the Grandview, Wash. area. Several years later he formed a business part nership with his brother St. Clair and began purchasing farm land in the Yakima Valley. During his years of farming he served as Board Director for Snipes Mtn. Irrigation District and the Sunnyside Port Commission. In addition to many years of farming his business ventures include Snipes Mtn. Gravel in Outlook, Washington; Snipes Mtn. Sand & Gravel in Hermiston, Ore., FarWest Concrete in Baker City as well as Double W, Inc. in Baker City. Laurie is survived by his wife Cora of 66 years, his daughters Laurel (Bob) Goodrich, Gale (Jonathan) Faber and his son Kevin (Ruth) Wood worth. He was additionally blessed with seven loving grandchildren: Nathan (Molly) Goodrich, Daniel (Sara) Goodrich, Ben (Adrianne) Goodrich, Rachel (Rob) Hardman, Jeremy Schulz, Adam (Nina) Woodworth and Leslie Woodworth. He knew and loved each one of his great-grandchildren as well: Ian, Cora, Ellie, Leah, Noah, Lucas Addison, Sven, Maiken and Griffin. He is also survived by his step-granddaughter Rachel Faber (Adam) Archer and daughters Riley and Jules and his former son-in-law Jack Schulz as well as his nephews Craig, Jeff, Brian, George and James Woodworth. He was preceded in death by his parents Cyril and Margaret Woodworth, his brothers George Lowry and St. Clair Woodworth as well as his infant son James Woodworth. Laurie was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sunnyside, Wash, for more than 35 years and became a member of First Lutheran Church in Baker City upon relocating to Oregon in 1990. Life will never be the same without him but his legacy of persever- •ance, love and devotion to family and enthusiasm for life will live on in those of us he left behind. Services will be announced at a later date. Thursday, April 7,2016 is Toby, a handsome year old neutered male Chihuahua who weighs about 5 pounds. Toby has gorgeous long hair which needs regular brushing. Toby gets along with all the other dogs in the foster home/doggie daycare but would do well being a single dog in the home. Toby is house trained and is a well behaved house pet. Toby is not a yapper, but he does bark when someone comes to the door or at strange noises. Toby is a little timid and cautious when meeting strangers.
