i Record-Courier THURSDAY, JANUARY 28,2016 Baker Boys 2-0 in GOL Baker/North Powder Wrestlers Continue to Advance this Season By Eden Taylor On Tuesday we finished our busy week with a 3-way dual in Vale. First, we wrestled Vale which had a very good group of Sen iors. We knew the final score was going to be close, but not quite as close as it was. We started off at 170lbs with Sam Harper, who ultimately saved us the dual. Harper was in the match the entire time, but came up a little short losing 10-6. Will Goodwin got the team started with a fall in just 33 seconds. Alex Duran stepped up to the plate for the team at 113lbs and got the job done in 47 seconds. Duran has improved throughout the season and will be a contender at Regionals. We had a few guys that should have pinned or majored their opponents, but settled for a win. These are the types of matches that could end up losing a dual for .us and almost did. It's difficult sometimes to put the foot on the throttle when you are ahead on points, but in these duals we really need our guys to go all out after the pin. Especially when we gave up three forfeits instead of our normal two at 195 & 220. The additional forfeit was at 152lbs. Going into the 145lb match Korey Grende vs Gage Fortin the dual score was 31-27 Baker. Grende battled through being sick and fought with all he could losing 6-3, but saving the team as there was a forfeit for Vale at 152 and a forfeit for Baker at 160. Final score was Baker 37, Vale 36. The Baker varsity boys basketball team traveled to Milton-Freewater on Saturday, Jan. 23, and came home with a 57-51 victory over the Pioneers. Bryson Srhith and Brad Zemmer each had 15 points, Logan Sand and Tean- cum Taylor contributed 10 points each. The win puts Baker in the lead in the Greater Oregon League. On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Baker lost in Emmett 48-37. At left, Brad Zemmer making two of his 15 points. Baker Girls Hang on to Win By Eden Taylor The Baker varsity girls basketball team had to hang on to a slim lead to defeat the Lady Pioneers at Mac-Hi on Satur day, Jan. 23. The score was 47-45 in a rough game. Brie Sand had 12 points, back from an injury. Grade Huggins and Madi Hampton each had 10. At left, Brie Sand elevating to score with 4 defenders on her. Baker JV Teams Pummel the Pioneers By Eden Taylor The Baker girls JV basketball team had an easy time with the JV Lady Pioneers in. Milton-Freewater on Saturday, Jan. 23. Baker won 62-19. Charlie Anthony was a great man, he was Ontario's Wrestling Coach for nearly 30 years. Coach Dewayne Lang and I attended his service last year. He was a huge inspiration to so many people in Ontario. He also made a huge impact on wrestling in the state of Oregon, and me in many ways. If you asked Charlie for help he would be there for you. I will never forget this man and the sacrifices he made for so many! All three Bulldogs advanced to thé finals! Alex Duran @ 106lbs, Nick Blair @ 126lbs, and G'ovi Quezada @ 182lbs! Alex Duran won his second tournament of the season taking first place in just 38 seconds. Submitted photo: The Spartan Wrestlers took second place at a recent 1A Tournament Badger Girls Win Two By Sam Stephens The Powder Valley Girls basketball team had two wins this last weekend starting on Friday with Wallowa on the Cougars home court. The girls had played Wallowa earlier this season at the La Grande Optimus Tournament and took a win against them then... but you just never know how the tide will go with girls sports. However, the Badgers came to play the Cougars with a determination to win and that’s what they did. The PV girls started with an early lead going into halftime with a score of 27-17 and kept it through out the game. Samantha Kerns and Megan Hufford were strong under the basket, Sa- vanah Stephens hit a couple of three pointers and was relentless on defense with several steals. Logan Nedrow, a freshman, stepped in to fill some big shoes as point guard while Kimberly Williams just did her thing playing a good game as usual, both offensively and defensively. The girls just played an overall good game. The final score 53-26 Badg ers. Saturday night basketball went about the same as Friday night The Badgers played hard throughout the whole game against Pine Eagle beating the Spartans by 31 points with an ending score of 49-18 - Lady Badgers. This next week should be an exciting weekend to watch some basketball the Badgers will travel on Friday to Joseph and then host Nixyaawii on Saturday game time will start at 2:30 with Boys JV then Varsity Girls to follow. Badger Boys Win Against Wallowa Injured Pine Eagle Player is Okay By Sam Stephens The Badger Boys took a win against Wallowa on Friday at their house with a scdre of43-29. On Saturday, they played Pine Eagle at home and although there was an injury on the court due to a Badger and Spartan colliding, the game went on. The Spartans came with only six players to the Badgers 12, so when one was hurt it was devastating to the Spartans not only because they had less players but also because of the seriousness of the injury. The Spartan player left by ambulance and was later life flighted to Boise with a sus pected concussion. Thankfully, when it was all said and done, the Pine Eagle player came out of the ordeal with nothing serious and will have to take a week oft but then will be able to continue playing. After the injury, however, the Spar tans had two of their remaining players foul out of the game, leaving them with only three players on the court to the Badgers five. Badger's Coach Lieuallen, however, did have his players play a 3 on 3 game even though they had five in the contest to make things a little more fair on the court. Inevitably with all things considered, the final score was 65-32 in favor of the Badgers. This Friday, the boys travel to Joseph then will get a chance to play Nixyaawii again at home on Saturday. Considering this is the only league team to have beaten the Badger boys, it should be the game to watch. Come support your local teams this weekend. Game time is 2:30 p.m. starting with Boys JV; following that will be the Varsity games.
