Fortner 3 Death / Service Notices Jan. 1929-Oct. 2015 Claudeen Nantz, 85, of the North Powder and La Grande area, died at a care home in La ■ Mr. Leland U. Fortner, 86, of i Kennewick, passed away peace- i fully on Monday, Oct. 5, with lov- i ing family members by his side. ; <Lee was bom on Jan. 20, 1929 in ; -Lakeview, Ore., to Philip and ■ Gertrude Fortner, the second of three sons. He grew up in ' Baker City, and was part of the BHS Class of 1947. He at- ' - tended college at Oregon State University, attaining his bach- s^elor’s degree. He then sewed as a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps ' * for two years, serving a tour of duty in Korea in 1952. Re- ‘ "turning home, he met and married his bride of 62 years, ‘ ’* Diona "Dee" Baum of Baker City. Over the next five years they had three children, Raymond, Douglas and Roxane. Lee obtained his Master's degree from OSU in 1955, and ‘7 returned to work for his father in Baker City for a short time, ’ ■before accepting a position with Seattle First National Bank in 1958, where he began a 27 year career in banking, taking "him and his family through various positions of increasing - responsibility in Seattle, Yakima, Mt. Vernon, Yakima again, 'and finally to Pasco in 1974. He retired in 1985 as a regional Vice President of SeaFirst based in Pasco. During his career «' he was active in many community affairs, as a member of the "Rotary»Club, and served a term on the school board in Mt. Vernon, Wash. In retirement, Lee and Dee traveled extensively, taking part in many Elderhostel programs, learning about the history qj and culture of many different places in the U.S., as well as ' ..extended journeys to Australia and Europe. He and Dee also ¿.played active roles in their children's and grandchildren's (¿¿ Jives, traveling often to visit them all. He stayed active phys- ,r.ically, playing golf and bowling for many years. ; . Lee is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Diona, and -their three children, Raymond (Ann), Douglas (Kathy), and .^Roxane Frostad (Mick). He is also survived by his younger . ( ,"brother Ross and nephews James Fortner (Kay), and Richard P Fortner (Nancy), and their families. Surviving grandchildren are Aidan Fortner, Mark Fortner, Clair Fortner, Noah Fortner, Michael Frostad, and Ryan Frostad (Kirsten). Lee touched and affected many lives during his life, and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A memorial serv ice was held Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Kennewick First ^’Presbyterian Church. Hope Cemetery at. J,. _ , [ p.m.’’"-“-''' " ’' j Leroy graduated from Nyssa High School and worked for ; the Forest Service. Leroy married Jean Harding on Nov. 20, i 1948. He joined the Navy on July 27,1943 serving in World ' War II and the Korean Conflict. He returned to the Forest J Service and was the fire control officer for the Wallow-Whit- ; man Forest when he retired in 1975. After retirement from j the Forest Service he worked for Rambling Rotors helicopter f service in La Grande and also served as the Baker County f Veterans service officer. ; L Since joining the Baker Elks in 1967, he had been in- ¿i- volved in many of the Elkis programs, including: Mead- tsr owood Springs Speech and Hearing Camp, Casey Eye Institute, most valuable student scholarship program, Miners Jubilee Brone and Bull Riding. During his active 45 years . as an Elk, he served as Exalted Ruler three times and filled the role of various chairs and positions on the local, district ^rand State levels. He was a member of the Methodist church and involved in many organizations and activities in the Baker area, in- eluding, but not limited to: American Legion, VFW, Baker “.„’Little League, Crazy 8s square dancing, Boy Scouts, Red Cross, 55 Alive, Trail Tenders at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Community Connections. He enjoyed many years of snowmobiling and shared this passion with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. He is survived by Jean, his wife of 67 years, sons Steve and Craig and daughter Becky, along with seven grandchil dren and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters and one brother. Donations in memory of Leroy can be made to the Elks Meadowood Speech and Hearing Camp and/or the Elks Na tional Foundation.
