Wednesday, June 20, 2018 Page A-3 Head Start celebrates 50 years of helping families CJ Schatza IVN Contributing Writer This year, Head Start of Southern Oregon celebrates its 50th anniversary. Founded in 1967, this federally funded program helps prepare preschool children from low-income families for success in schooling and throughout life. This is accomplished through involvement in a variety of educational activities in stimulating settings to help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. While Head Start prepares children ages three to five for their upcoming school experiences and the skills needed to thrive in them, the complementary program Early Head Start serves pregnant women and children birth to three, strengthening their relationships and providing guidance on developmental matters, and programs are available to enhance literacy for Spanish- speaking families. “Illinois Valley Head Start celebrated Southern Oregon’s 50th Anniversary with a theme of everything being done in ‘50s,” said Terah Wheeler- Henrich, multi-site area manager for I.V./Redwood Head Start, Lorna Byrne and Grants Pass Preschool Promise. “This was a parent- involved afternoon of fun, games, a stem project, as well as outside games such as a bean bag toss, a cone game, face painting, planting of a flower to take home, and ending the afternoon with planting a tree in commemoration of the highlighted day. In front of the tree is a child- made mosaic with a large 50!” While the IV/Redwood branch of Head Start has already celebrated with the families they help, the Early Head Start center in Cave Junction plans to have similar festivities merge with the regular end of the year celebrations in early August. Nalita Baumback, center manager for Early Head Start Cave Junction, recounted some significant milestones for her branch of the organization: “In 1994, we received the first Early Head Start grant in the State of Oregon to serve 80 pregnant women, infants and toddlers. In 1996 Early Head Start Cave Junction center opened.” Both Baumback and Wheeler- Henrich stressed the importance of social and emotional facets of development in readying children for successful lives. According to Baumback, “Young children are beginning to understand their emotions and need guidance on how to express these feelings to others. When they feel secure and experience consistent routines, they can begin to build these skills.” Couple that skill-building with the free medical and dental care, healthy meals, and outdoor and indoor play that children under Head Start’s purview receive, it is clear that they are in the optimum environment in terms of safety and learning. Wheeler-Henrich added, “Our endeavor is to provide a positive and safe environment for children to learn in. We use tools such as PBIS (Positive Behavior Individual Support) which uses the idea that we want to create a positive climate in the classrooms, using positive redirection and words, and to not substantiate the negative.” Families everywhere face a multitude of challenges and impediments to raising children in an effective manner, and Southern Oregon is no different. Among these are homelessness, unemployment, mental health problems, physical disabilities, and a lack of suitable means to achieve financial stability.
