Cougars start
off year with
a big win
The Illinois Valley High School Cougars
returned to the gridiron last week. The boys trav-
eled to Roseburg’s Findlay Field on Friday, Sept.
1, chalking up a 40-20 win against the Culver
Bulldogs in a non-league game. Kickoff was at
noon, and the heat and smoky, hazy conditions
were challenging. Sophomore Elijah Polk led the
Cougars in scoring with four touchdowns and
junior Caleb Hess contributed two TDs in the
fourth quarter. The Cougars travel to Adair Village
(near Corvallis) Friday, Sept. 8 to face the Santiam
Christian Eagles.
Friday Sept. 1 IVHS traveled to Roseburg to play
Culver High School. Quarterback Caleb Hess, No. 7,
scrambles toward the end zone, earning a first down
and positioning the Cougars to score on the next

Up-cycle Furniture Contest judging grows near
The opportunity to win $500, $300, and $200 in cash for
first, second, and third places is close! Judging will occur at the
closing session of the Illinois Valley Farmers’ Market Sept. 22,
and awards will be given out that day.
For the second year in a row, the Southern Oregon
Guild is sponsoring the Up-cycle Furniture Contest to
encourage creativity. Unusual ideas and thinking outside the
box are the challenge. With no entry fee and using “junk” for
materials, the contest is available to anyone of any age with a
creative idea.

safe for its function. A chair must be strong enough to sit on
safely, for example.
“If you’ve started your entry, get ready to submit it.
If you haven’t started yet, you’d better move fast,” said Guild
President, Joyce Abrams.
Bring your piece to the I.V. Farmers’ Market at Jubilee
Park by 4 p.m. on Sept. 22. Judging will begin at 4 and awards
will be presented around 5 p.m.
