Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, Ore. Wednesday, August 23, 2017 Page A-5 3 sisters honored in Labor Day Parade Jason McMillen IVN Contributing Writer Dorothy Milner, Mattie Nelson and Annetta Floyd, all sisters, have been elected to fill the Grand Marshal position for the annual Lions Club Labor Day Parade which will be held on Sept. 3 in Cave Junction. The Grand Marshal, or parade leader, is reserved only for those who are vigorously active in the community. It is not uncommon for there to be more than one person assigned the honor. They were selected to lead the parade due to their kind hearts, lifelong membership to the community and their willingness to help out whoever is in need, whenever they can. The trio frequently assists the Lions Club during official events but they also do a considerable amount of their paper work and lend their hands to whatever task the club asks of them. They have been affiliated with the Lions Club since they were children and, in addition to being Grand Marshals this year, will be prepping food for the club’s famous burger, the Lion Burger. “If they’re shorthanded, we’ll step in and pick up a space or two but we’re not as young as we used to be,” Nelson said, inferring that their participation in the community may be slowing down a bit. Milner was part of Josephine County’s Search and Rescue Division for many years and is also a lifetime member of the American Legion, an organization for which she served two terms as president. Throughout her lifetime, Nelson worked extensively with local schools, the elderly and on top of that she also made a habit of taking care of foster children, three of which were on a long- term basis. Floyd also worked extensively for schools and with the elderly. Their sister Darlene also was very active in the community, and closely associated with the I.V. Lions, but has since moved to Alaska where her daughter resides. Throughout their lives, the three sisters have worked for a great many local businesses and consider themselves to be well-known faces around town. Helping others was said to be their collective, and only, hobby. “We just make ourselves pretty available to anyone in need here,” Nelson said, “Anyone that wants. If we can help them, we’ll help them.” Their family came to Oregon from Indiana back in 1953 and, still very young at the time, they attended local schools and graduated from Illinois Valley High School. The three have spent the vast majority of their lives in the I.V. However, Floyd spent a number of years in Africa, where her husband, (Photo by Jason McMillen, Illinois Valley News) The sisters, Dorothy Milner (left), Mattie Nelson and Annetta Floyd will be the Grand Marshals in the 2017 I.V. It’s an honor, it really is,” Nelson said, happy to provide one more service to her local and vibrant community. “We’ll continue do it for the Valley as long as we can.” The Archive Zone: by Hillary Mohr from the Illinois Valley News archives This week we bring you a change of pace, not all about the Illinois Valley, but it was reported in the Illinois Valley News, making it fair game. From car crashes to rendezvous with ex-spouses, it is sure to be a popcorn worthy time in this week’s Archive Zone. Date: August 6, 1997. Driver goes through windshield in crash. Dallas R. McCall, 58, of rural Grants Pass, died of injuries suffered when he went through the windshield after his car struck a large oak tree head-on shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, said Oregon State Police. The accident occurred on Riverbanks Road at Marcy Loop. The victim was not wearing a safety belt said OSP. McCall’s car round a left-hand curve and drifted off the right shoulder into bar ditch. The 1973 Cadillac, registered in Nevada, continued for approximately 100 feet before hitting the tree, said OSP. The vehicle was damaged extensively. Log truck driver crushed in crash; woman arrested for manslaughter. Following the death of a log truck driver crushed by his load, a Klamath Falls woman was charged with second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence of intoxicants, said Oregon State Police. Arrested on Monday, Aug. 4 was Dorothy C. Peever, 50. Her blood alcohol content was listed by OSP as .25. The legal limit is .08 in Oregon. The victim was identified as Anthony T. Maddock, 26, of Bly. OSP said the accident occurred on Hwy. 140 near milepost 14, approximately halfway between Eagle Point and Lake-O-The- Woods. The trucker was dead at the scene. The suspect suffered minor lacerations and scrapes, said OSP. According to state police: The fully loaded log trailer pulled by a semi-truck was westbound, while Ms. Peever’s car was eastbound. Her car crossed over the center line approximately 3 feet and struck the left-front of the truck. The trick left the roadway to the south and struck several large rocks. The load of logs moved forward and crushed the cab, killing Maddock. The car veered to the south, said OSP, struck a rock and rolled onto its top. Investigation indicated intoxication on the part of the suspect, and blood was drawn under search warrant. Tales from the Police Blotter. *A woman in Cave Junction said that her boyfriend left a note saying he was going to meet his ex-wife and didn’t come home. A friend of the ex-wife reportedly said that prior to going to meet her ex-husband she said there should be concern if she wasn’t back in an hour. Neither the man nor the woman could be located.
