New opportunities to help the community are coming up in the next few weeks. One volunteer effort will be I.V. by Candlelight Walk that will take place Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. which is a walk to support public safety following the Thursday Concert in the Park at Jubilee. CJ Patrol, Neighborhood Watch and other public safety related organizations will have volunteer information tables at the park. Thibodeaux will perform at the Concerts in the Park the night of Aug. 3 before I.V. by Candlelight. The public is invited to meet at the Jubilee Park stage and then walk from Watkins to Shop Smart, north on Hussey to Lister, then east to 199 before returning to Watkins. Those who may not be able to walk the entire route are welcome to walk through Taylor’s parking lot to the pedestrian walkway and wait for the group at the picnic table by Dairy Queen. Cave Junction City Councilor Jean Ann Miles is coordinating the event and looking for volunteers and donations. “Last year, we organized this walk as part of the Ford Family Leadership Institute training and were given a $1,000 budget to work with,” Miles said. “It generated so much positivity and people were so excited, that we decided to do it again. Now that the public safety levy has passed, this is a great way to celebrate the positive changes in our community.” Miles stated, “A lot of good things are happening in our valley. For example, Mayor Dalegowski announced a month ago that there will be a park host at Jubilee Park and we also want to honor the important work Jimmy Evans and CJ Patrol are continuing to do.” Miles pointed out that the walk is also a way to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away as well as continue to support law enforcement and build on fellowship and friendship. The group is looking for donations of S’more sticks and supplies including Hershey bars, marshmallows and graham crackers. They also need portable fire pits to be loaned for the event. Another volunteer opportunity is helping the Selma Community and Education Center. They are now accepting new members and volunteers as well as donations of flowers and shrubbery for a landscaping project. The organization held their annual membership meeting July 15 to install new officers, including chair Paul Koci, vice-chair Mitch Stauginger, treasurer Guy Hall and secretary Kortney Cochran. “We’re going to keep on doing the Selma Center Drive-in Movies starting at 9:30 p.m. every Friday through the end of September. We’re also going to have the building professionally painted, so we’re accepting donations of primer,” Koci said. He also said the public is invited to attend the board meetings at 6 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month. “If anyone wants to join a committee or plan an event, they need to come in and present the idea to the board,” Koci said. Upcoming events include the Arts Council’s Harvest Moon Honky-tonk Sept. 23 and the annual Acorn Festival Sept. 30. The Selma Center’s office hours are currently 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Starting in August the office will be open every afternoon during the work week.
