The burglar made off with some change, an electronic tablet and attempted to break into the register. Fortunately, no pizza making supplies were stolen and the burglar, for unknown reasons, didn’t wear a mask. The suspect was also caught the day before attempting to steal soda. During an investigation of video surveillance footage, law enforcement personnel determined that Luey Glenn, 28, was a“person of interest” in the case. The homeless man was later arrested July 11 near 305 Redwood Highway at approximately 3:30 p.m. for burglary II, theft III and criminal mischief III. Glenn was also charged with resisting arrest. Scott Thoms, owner of the business, was alerted in his home by an alarm system which prompted him to intercept the burglar in the act. When Thoms arrived, he was armed and prepared to use whatever force was appropriate for the situation but the burglar, who was at this point attempting to pull the register out of the wall, immediately fled the scene. “Luckily I live close enough and can get there pretty quick,” Thoms said, “If he would have been able to stay in there a little bit longer I’m sure he would have done a little bit more damage.” The suspect entered the business through a window which was pried open. This action caused the alarm to go off. Despite being pried open, the window sustained no damage. According to Thoms, Perfect Pizza has been broken into about four times since the business was started. The most recent occurrence, excluding the present, happened about 10 years ago. “It’s interesting that people would even think to break into the pizza place because there’s nothing but food there,” Thoms concluded. Indeed, because of recent events, Thoms will no doubt keep a close and watchful eye on his business so that he can catch any other would-be pizza shop plundering desperados. New artists’ deadline for Artoberfest applications A new deadline has been set for artists and fine craftspeople to apply for the Southern Oregon Guild’s 6th annual fall art fair, Artoberfest 2017. Applications must now be completed by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4. The Guild invites artists and fine craftspeople from throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California to apply to this unique intimate indoor fall show in the Illinois Valley. It is the same weekend as the acclaimed Valley Girls Quilt Show, Oct. 20, 21 and 22. The application process has two phases. First is completion of the online form at the Guild’s website, www.southernoregonguild. org. Details of the show are available in the online Prospectus that can be read online or downloaded. After submitting the online application, you will receive an email with instructions on submitting the required photographs, which is phase two. Jurors Kristen O’Neil and Peter Chasar will review all applications Aug. 7. Notifications to artists will go out Aug. 14. Juror Kristen O’Neil is an award-winning painter and graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago. She helped to revive the Open Studios artist tour last year in Grants Pass, is a popular teacher of art to both adults and children, and works at the Grants Pass Museum of Art. Juror Pete Chasar is a multidiscipline artist based in Brookings. His early years included schooling in art, study of the old and modern masters in New York City’s major museums, and commercial art in the East Coast world of advertising. An experimental artist, he works in painting, sculpture and multimedia. His art has been displayed at shows from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Sacramento and Vancouver, Washington, and is currently on display at galleries in Southern Oregon and Northern California.
