Fire burning near
Summer Lake
50 years handed out for
Lake Selmac murder
SUMMER LAKE, Ore. (AP) — A wildfire
burning in near Summer Lake in south-central
Oregon has destroyed a hunting cabin and an
outbuilding.
Authorities say dozens of firefighters are
tackling the blaze that has burned about 1 ½ square
miles (2.6 square kilometers) of sage brush and
shrubs by Sunday morning. The fire was reported
Saturday afternoon.
The South Central Oregon Fire Management
Partnership says crews are fighting the blaze with
helicopters, air tankers, dozers and hand crews.
They’re working in steep, rocky terrain to stop the
fire from spreading north or south.
Drivers along a stretch of Highway 31 between
Summer Lake and Paisley should expect intermittent
road closure because of the smoke and emergency
response vehicles.
On June 28, 2017, Marshall McKenna, Carroll
Ballard and Blake Sibley entered plea agreements for
murder and robbery 1 related to the death of Robert L.
Hunington at the Lake Selmac boat ramp.
Marshall McKenna plead to murder with a firearm,
was sentenced to true life with a possibility of parole
after 25 years, and life time post prison supervision on
one count of murder with a firearm.
Carroll “BJ” Ballard plead to manslaughter in
the first degree and robbery in the first degree, and
received a total of 15 years prison (sentenced on April
21, 2016) and agreed to be a testifier against Marshall
McKenna.
Blake Sibley plead to manslaughter in the first
degree and robbery in the first degree, and received a
total of 10 years prison (sentenced on March 17, 2016)
and agreed to be a testifier against Marshall McKenna
and Carroll (BJ) Ballard.
Library seeks signature art for
Illinois Valley children’s library
Josephine Community
Libraries, Inc. seeks fine
artwork for its children’s
library in Illinois Valley,
209 W Palmer Street, that
communicates a love of
reading, appreciation for
books, and connection
with nature through
artistic multi-media
materials and concept
content.
In early 2017, with
the support of grants
and community donors,
Josephine Community
Libraries renovated the
Illinois Valley children’s
library, modernizing the
1960s-style children’s
area and creating an
exploratory, flexible,
multimedia space that
provides an effective
environment for a variety
of children’s literacy
programs conducive to
children of different age
groups.
Qualifications, based
on examples of previous
work, are sought from
artists interested in the
commission of artwork
for the children’s library
signature art project.
Applications are due by
4 p.m. on Saturday, July
29. A selection committee
will choose the artist
or artist team from the
applications by Aug. 18
and installation of the
artwork will begin late
October 2017.
The budget for the
Grants Pass children’s
library signature art
is $2,000 including
artist fees, fabrication
costs, installation,
documentation, and other
project costs. This project
was made possible by a
generous grant from the
Josephine County Cultural
Coalition.
