Net Neutrality; A Non-Partisan Issue The information we seek may not always be easily available if our new FCC chairman, Ajit Pai, has his way. Definition: Net neutrality is the principle that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and governments regulating the Internet should treat all data on the Internet the same, not discriminating or charging differentially. The “free” internet is fundamental to our modern day democracy, regardless of your party affiliation. Without net neutrality rules in place, ISPs can sell fast access to the highest bidder. Net neutrality rules prevent this by requiring ISPs to connect users to all lawful content on the internet equally, without giving preferential treatment to certain sites or services. Pai has proposed reversal of the FCC’s Title II authority (a classification that allows the FCC to protect net neutrality by regulating against paid prioritization). If enacted, Chairman Pai’s plan would dismantle the legal foundation of the Open Internet. The new proposal has the ludicrous title “Restoring Internet Freedom”, meaning, giving freedom to large ISPs like AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, etc. to control information by charging for fast use! Users could end up seeing those charges on our end! Get on the web (ironic) to find more information about this. We have until July 17 for public comment! Write to the FCC and your congressional representatives and say you support Internet Neutrality!
